There was no teaching for the past week at Wongalethu High School in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, according to a report on Thursday.

The Dispatch Online reported that teachers fled the school last week Wednesday, during a protest in fear of intimidation from pupils.

The Grade 12 pupils staged a protest after their only mathematics teacher was redeployed to a neighbouring school and demanded his reinstatement.

"We are concerned that in just a few months' time we will have to start with exams and we might fail because we do not have a maths teacher," head of the Learner Representative Council Lukhanyo Booi said.

"We are forced to meet with our former teacher for lessons after school in groups of 10 to 15. This is strenuous for us and for him."

Pupils approached the Mdantsane police and the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court to obtain a permit to protest on Monday because they wanted permission to take their grievances to the head office of the provincial education department in King William's Town, according to the report.

The students failed to secure transport to go to the provincial department.

A meeting was organised with teachers, the school governing body (SBG), pupils and parents by the district director of the education department's office in Mdantsane, Sihle Mnguni, the Dispatch Online reported.

"It was more a listening-in session than a meeting, therefore I cannot divulge the details just yet, but we will be engaging with them again," Mnguni was quoted as saying.

The SGB said parents were concerned that pupils were not learning.

Can a teacher just be told to go or do you ask and apply to go? Maybe he is tired of horrid kids?

He's tutoring them in his own time after school.

We lost one teacher, so we'll chase them all away. The logic is astounding.

More contributions to the teacher absenteeism record..... pupils protest for a day and teachers flee for a week....

Well they seeked permission to protest and didnt burn the place down. Suppose that is a sign of progress

Meh been up since 3am.oh and my grad 12 English teacher redeployed. Didnt protest was happy to fail

Maybe this is where your Grade 12 English teacher has gone ?

Michael Smith offering cushy job in the UK

Perhaps Mr Michael Smith is actually from Nigeria ?

Check out the job ad and decide for yourself -- not sure how this got past the MyBB nanny minders ?????

He's tutoring them in his own time after school.

yes but only the kids that want to be taught and pitch up. That is the nice thing about elective education (IMO) you only get kids that want to or their parents want it bad enough for them to make them behave. :D

In this case the teacher was told to go. Obviously teachers can also apply for posts elsewhere...
Lovely.

Department to Resolve Eastern Cape School Problems

Meetings are underway in an attempt to resolve problems at Wongalethu High School in Mdantsane, where there has been no teaching for a week, the Eastern Cape education department said on Thursday.

"The department is currently attending to the matter and our intention is to find an amicable solution to ensure teaching and learning takes place there," said spokesman Malibongwe Mtima.

The Dispatch Online reported earlier that teachers fled the school during a protest last Wednesday, in fear of intimidation by pupils.

The Grade 12 pupils staged a protest after their only maths teacher was redeployed to a neighbouring school. They demanded his reinstatement.

"We are concerned that, in just a few months' time, we will have to start with exams and we might fail because we do not have a maths teacher," said Learner Representative Council head Lukhanyo Booi.

"We are forced to meet with our former teacher for lessons after school in groups of 10 to 15. This is strenuous for us and for him."

Pupils approached the Mdantsane police and the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court to obtain a permit to protest on Monday.

They wanted permission to take their grievances to the head office of the provincial education department in King William's Town, The Dispatch Online reported.

However, they failed to secure transport to get to the provincial department.

A meeting was then reportedly organised between teachers, the school governing body, pupils and parents by Sihle Mnguni, the district director of the education department's office in Mdantsane.

Mnguni described the meeting as a "listening-in session" and said that as such, he could not reveal the details.

Well, in grade 11 I had an alcoholic for a physics teacher, he was only present for 3months of the year.

Department and school did nothing.
