Noise margin jus around between 0.5 and 14 and autenuation jumps from 48.5 to 58.5 and then it will sync at terrible speeds telkom says when they check at the exchange nothimg is wrong with line. some days it will work perfectly at 2048 autenuation at 49 then just disconnects randomly to 58 atenuation and sync at 500 its been like this for 3 months now.

Could be a bad/corroded connection at the pole box (if like me you have overhead cable from the nearest street-corner junction box to the house). If you have a phone on the same line, do you hear noise when the line degrades? Hum or crackling/impulse noise?
Any of these point to an intermittent Telkom line problem - but catching it while it's faulty is going to be a challenge.

You don't have any other equipment connected to the line perhaps? Might possibly be worth replacing the line filters, if there's a chance they have been damaged by lightning.

Hi GreenArrow

Hi GreenArrow,
Sorry to hear the remedial work from Telkom has not provided you with the speed you need. If it rains and the line goes down then there is likely to be a faulty cable. Telkom is going to have to fix that. Just to make sure that it is not your router see if you can exchange your router with the guy down the street. If he then cannot connect your router is contributing to the problem. If you get connection when it is dry with his router then double confirmation of the router contributing.
As for the rain. Telkom and voice complaints is the first place to go.

Regards

Tim

Yes there is noise on the line now after the rain, before it didn't have and the line was still like this.
None other equipment on the line.

Some stats. Have to use 3G to make all these post so fun.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.5 db 30.0 db
Noise Margin 17.1 db 12.0 db

A cable was damaged at the house next to ours so everything is fixed now

Next time something like this happens, plug a phone into the line and listen for noise. Hum and/or crackle and pop means line problems. Usually Telkom techs will pick this up - they have the tools to do so. It seems you were just unlucky.
So now you have 17 dB noise margin - excellent!

Yeah the first tech said there is a problem but we will come fix it, i asked when he said no no next week what an ass.
The tech of today climbed over the wall to the next house to fix the problem he was very adamant to fix it. :)
