Noise on the Line

Hi.

Can anyone in JHB with a "decent" adsl with a Netgear DG834 router gimme a ping to kalahari.mweb.co.za?

I used to get 26ms on ISDN, now im getting....

I'd expected my ping to be waay better than this, and I think I have lotsa noise on the line. (I think)

ALso can u please paste your noise line here, and ure ping on a Netgear DG834?

Btw im not running my ADSL with a filter on the line, coz the one I got with my Netgear is faulty, could that also be the reason for my ping?

Last nite my ping SPIKED A LOT, and when I looked at statistics, my ADSL was connected at 928kbs instead of 2048kbs.....

So can u guys plz gimme the info, im wondering if I should phone telkom or not.

I've got the netgear dg834g which is the same as yours but with wireless.

The filter you got with your netgear isn't faulty. It's just built based on the european standard so it doesnt seem to work here. I had to buy telkom filters cos those are the only ones that you can get here. From what i remember they were R40 each.

My statistics are:
downstream upstream
connection speed 2048kbps 512kbps
line attenuation 47db 26.5db
noise margain 11db 20db

You seem to be closer to your exchange than me cos your line attenuation is lower than mine (the closer to the exchange you are the lower the resistance in the copper wire).

The reason why your router sometimes connects at lower speeds is definately to do with the fact that your phone/s don't have filters. I'm assuming that your connection get worse when someone is on the phone or when it's ringing.

You're going to have to get yourself a filter for each phone/fax machine on your line. If you can't get one soon just try unplugging all your voice devices (phones etc). If you still experience problems call telkom and ask them to come out and investigate the problem.

Today a very efficient gentleman from telkom came out to investigate my adsl line because it was less than a month old and it went down. Even though the problem was at the exchange and has been fixed for the last week he still came out to check the line. He found that the chap who has installed my ADSL has done a crappy job and also that some of the line (window block) was in bad shape cos of corrosion. So he rewired a few things and replaced everything that was old and left. He also discovered that when the phones ring, the ADSL line quality dropped quite a bit. I didn't really notice that, but i think he fixed that too.

So the moral of all my ramblings is that if the filters dont work, just give telkom a call and maybe you'll be lucky enough to get a fellow like this in to fix your problems. Oh and by the way, if you log quite a few faults within a certain time period (maybe 4 in 30 days or something), they will send someone more qualified out to investigate.

Thanks man, ill get a filter today, u been very helpfull :), and ill post my ping, if my ping still remains the same ill phone telkom. :)
 
Gozzy - they dont promise any ping, if you really find a helpfull techie who gives a rats ass then you might get it lower if possible.

My latency went from minimum of 8ms to closes hop to 32ms now and they dont give a RATS ASS.
