Hey guys I need some advice. My graphics card has recently become very noisy, even when idle and it's driving me nuts.
I've tried cleaning out the dust but that didn't help, so I was thinking maybe it would be possible to replace the fan.
It's an old Geforce 4 AGP.
My question is: would it be cheaper to buy an aftermarket fan, if that's even possible, or to buy a second hand graphics card?

My suggestion would be to just get yourself a new graphics card rather than worry about replacing fans etc. This view is based on some of the specials shown on the esquire brochure recently. There are some entry level AGP cards there priced from R330.

And I am no expert on graphics card but with you saying that your card is rather old I am almost positive one of the current entry level cards would perform the same as your old card... but perhaps someone more clued up can comment further....

i dont know alot either but gpu's are becoming extremely cheap and i'm sure you'll find one with fairly little trouble. it would be way more simple then to find a new fan and such. what you could also try is and overclocking tool to lower fan speed

If you intend replacing you AGP card, make sure your motherboard supports the AGP speed. Most AGP cards purchased now days (if you can find them) are 8X AGP.

If you have a 4X or 2X AGP motherboard, its not going to work.

There are after market Fans available, I replaced one just the other day. The replacement fan kit was about R120.00

Look for Vizo Sleet Chipset Cooler Model NBC-101. Comes with a fan, silicone paste, 2 small chipset heatsinks and power adapters.

You can get them from Frotosa in JHB

An AGP 8x card will work on an AGP 4x board ........ my 4th PC before my current one had that setup.

On Topic - I agree that you should try get a new card.

You are quite right ...... if the chipset is a nVidia FX5200 or lower or is ATI.

nVidia stopped supporting 4X with the release of FX6200 and later chipsets.

If it's not to fooked I have found that a drop of machine oil do miracles for the noise on some fans. Lift the the sticker over the bearing/sleeve up to gain access.

with nvidia constantly bringing out new cards, there will be some really good prices out there. just shop around maybe... i think agp cards are a little more expensive than pci-e cards.

But the 6200 works on 4x
