NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

Viper, i did a hard reset last night, its *#7780#
Freom what I've read, that's a "soft" reset (whatever that may be. For a "hard" reset switch off the phone, hold down the green, red and camera buttons and switch on the phone while still holding those buttons down until after you get the welcome screen. Just remember to backup first.

And yes, best to do it before you start installing apps - even with the backup I lost a few.

ok so i bought a cover - silocone one - vodacome was R129 found one at one of these "knock off" stalls outside - R80
They look identical! :D

So remy - how is smartview.
I had an app - called smartmovie - trial expired though.

So i jus got my 5800 from mtndirect...i've seen a couple of links for games and apps but its jus too much to go through each one. so i jus wanted to find out from u guys wats the recommended apps/games etc that i shud start with.

whats a good web browser to use on the 5800 beside the one that comes with the phone? i've tried opera mini, but it quits sometimes... :(

Opera seems the best although Ive had exactly the same problem...it happens when you scroll onto the border of the application which makes it close sometimes....very irritating:mad:

I did the hard reset and re-installed all my apps...
Hope my apps dont disappear again..

Downloaded the OVI store app..
found some great apps in the ovi store :)

Bought the same case as Javs, just waiting to receive it this week.

Simple, yet stupid question. Since this is a touch screen phone. What is the point of having a screen protector? Does the touch, stylus etc. actually work with the protector on the phone? :erm:

I've also tried to install the trial of Garmin XT on my phone. I get it installed by extracting the MSI and installing the .SIS file straight to the phone, but otherwise Garmin installation doesn't find my phone.

Any tips to install it correctly? If I use the .sis file and open Garmin XT then I see the logo and app closes again. I've tried soft resetting the phone as well, but it doesn't work.

Thanks

Well, the screen protector stop it from getting scratched and, yes, the screen works perfectly fine. I've brought in some polymer screen protectors that cover front, sides and back and so far they're great. One big advantage is also that it hardly shows fingerprints at all. I've got eight spare for sale which I will post in the appropriate forum shortly.

The way I installed Garmin was to first install Garmin Mapsource on my PC, get that up and running with the current maps, then installed these files from my PC onto my phone:
Garmin Mobile XT Support Files
v4GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50050
I found that I needed to use file manager on the phone to install the sis file. Finally, I used Mapsource to select the maps I wanted to transfer to the phone. Just make sure to select mass storage in your USB mode (this might be your problem). It was actually quite easy in the end, but every now and then Garmin (or the phone itself) goes wonky and I need to reinstall. I had to do that this morning and now all my saved places are gone. Grr.

I'll tell you what I've got on mine:

Bucket loads (about 5Gb) of music
Nokia Maps (six month license)
WeFi
Paint Pad
Adobe PDF reader (30 day trial)
AccuWeather (free Nokia app)
Guardian (paid for) - if my phone is stolen/lost, sends me the new SIM card number and details, can also track the phone by GPS.
Garmin Mobile XT - much better than Nokia maps
Labyrinth Lite - trial game - very nice.
Blackboard Lite - also trial
Ovi - not really worth the bother
Handwriting calculator - Nokia beta
PhoneNetInfo and DeviceInfo - pretty much the same
Mobile Paint
Mobbler
BrightLight (a must)
Photo Browser - Nokia Beta
MSDict - Concise Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus - much better than the Nokia dictionary which I'd love to uninstall
Prince of Persia
Spb Puzzle - (paid for) - great puzzle game
Notes on the Phone - don't use it
Soft Touch - free stop watch
Far Cry 2 - so so, but let's face it, side scrolling games are soo last century
GMail - yeah, baby! Since I've ported all my email to Google Apps, I can get my mail anytime, anywhere
Vradio - nice but limited number of Internet radio stations
Scratchpad - for handwritten notes. Not great but the only one out there
Opera Mini
Nimbuzz - for Skype but I haven't got it working yet. Skype itself doesn't yet have a client for our phones
H.A.W.X. - game but I can't say much about it.
OfficeSuite (paid for) - so I can edit Office docs.
Ovi Files - so I can access my PC from the phone
For Internet radio via WiFi, I use the Moodio web site
Smart Movie for watching video
To convert video to Nokia format, get Super Video which is simply the best and free. Not easy to set up, so look for a tutorial.

Oh, and don't install anything from DrJukka.com if you don't want an unremoveable folder in your main menus.

I'm going to have to get a PC card reader to see if I can get rid of this one.

Thanks a lot...at least i know where to start now

Thanks so much buffalobill :)

Appreciate the help. I'll give it a shot.

Wouldn't it be easiest just to install it using the Garmin DVD (R10). It does everything at once.

In fact going further into this, the essential files for the 5800 don't seem to be included in the Garmin disk (which I have). For me, it involved a lot of trial and error and the official local site http://www.garmaps.co.za is not all that helpful either.

I tried that and it didn't work. YMMV though. What's your experience?
On the 6210 Nav it does. Is it supposed to work on the 5800??

I managed to get the free trial going without too much hassle. I must say, Garmin know nothing about writing installs.

I don't know if that's messed up the 'free' option (*cough*).

Dunno if it's supposed to work in the 5800 or not, but it didn't work for me. Of course, I might have not have chosen the right USB mode when I tried the install. The disk is fine for installing the source programs on your PC, though. And if you think Garmin can't write installs, neither can Nokia. Ovi really is a tedious and slow program to work with.

A word of advice for all reading this thread. Never let Ovi upgrade your Ovi programs like Nokia Music. Rather download manually and install from the download. I had Ovi "updating" the latest Nokia Music which I don't want anyway and it's a huge file at 175Mb (for some reason, any Nokia updates involve a complete download of the entire program). The download bombed at 174Mb and Nokia's got no autoresume so it wants to start again from scratch!

When connecting the Nokia cable, don't select Nokia PC Suite, use Mass Storage. It won't work otherwise.
