NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

Updated my firmware OTA last night :p

Update failed first time because I had the phone on the charger. When battery was full, I switched the phone on again and started the update again.

Download took a while, 6.5mb on Edge, but update was done in less than 4 minutes.

Haven't had a chance to play around with it yet though ;)

(Edit: oh yeah, and got GarminXT installed)

I can't say I noticed any difference with V.30-whatever. I hope you did a complete backup before doing this?

Can you share your experience with the Garmin install?

Has anyone here successfully paired their 5800 with a Bluetooth keyboard? I'm planning on trying this out, but first hope someone's had experience they can share.

My phones definitely more snappier with the new FW. It's like the apps launch and even close faster and my phone boots quicker as well.

GarminXT:
Inserted the USB cable in my laptop and phone, chose mass storage mode, opened the GXT installer and it picked up my phone, clicked install and voila.

Now I have to load some maps, but the tower where I live has some 3G problems, so I only get below par Edge. Hopefully it's sorted tonight so I can play a bit.

I am experiencing 2 new issues:

1. The Alarm clock - If I set the alarm for 07h00 it wil go off at 07h04, if I set it to 07h15 it will go off at 07h19. Always 4 minutes late, not the end of the world but I am worried its going to forget completely one day.

2. Web browser - Get a "system error" a few times a day and I have to restart the application.

My issues:

1. Auto-rotate not working. Sometimes gets stuck on full qwerty keyboard. Have to take in to vodacare.

2. My Web browsers hangs a lot. Probably, out of memory. It doesn't handle pop-up windows well. If I switch off then switch on the phone, it sometimes does not request the pin code.

But overall, really cool phone. Full Touch Screen is not the most practical, but brilliant phone.

You can install the maps from the disk (R10 at various stores), but you need to pay to activate them *cough*
I tried out Google maps and while decent enough, I don't see the point (or the expense) of an online only GPS application which frankly is going to be useless when you're in the deep wilds of Africa when you need it most. Garmin's still the bee's nuts although I haven't given Tom Tom a chance.
I read some good reports about Sygic http://www.sygic.com but sadly they don't have SA maps which I confirmed with them. "We are considering about it and maybe in the future we will have also a package that will contain it."

Only problem i'm having with the phone is if i'm on a long drive while using the map application, the screen goes off then i have to touch it again to keep it on. any idea's on how to keep the screen on all the time?

I think the maximum setting is 60 seconds. Lame, you should be able to change it or turn it off.

having none of these problems

If it's Nokia Maps, I really detest it as one of the most user unfriendly applications around.

From maps>tools>settings>navigation>backlight try setting it as "always on". That should probably do the trick, but you're probably going to need an in-car charger if it's a long drive. I've read that you can expect about four hours battery life using active GPS. I suspect it may be less, though.

press menu, go to applications, location, gps data, options, settings, then under light change it to "on during navigation"

Hard reset might do the trick. Switch off and hold down green and red AND camera buttons while switching on until after the welcome screen pops up. You need to be a bit of a contortionist to do this and do a backup first. YMMV though and don't hold me accountable if anything goes wrong.
Maybe also get rid of some apps and rather install them on the e: drive. I've got masses of stuff on mine, but still have have 42Mb free.

Which map are you using?

The Nokia Map App. that comes with the phone.

Thanks a lot... i will try this later :)

is there an accessory that i can buy to stick the phone on my car's dashboard or windscreen? .... i'm thinking of sticking that stand that comes with my phone onto the dashboard with presstick... and sticking the phone onto it with more presstick so it doesn't jump off :D but is there an accessory that can get me around this?
