NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

thanks... for the link... i will try the local cell phone shops for car accessories.

I'm getting my 5800XM on Sunday from Vodacom. What will be the best way to get it updated with the latest firmware? Can I ask the technicians at the store to do it?

Vodacom4me has a car cradle for the 5800XM its about R600.

is there an accessory that i can buy to stick the phone on my car's dashboard or windscreen? .... i'm thinking of sticking that stand that comes with my phone onto the dashboard with presstick... and sticking the phone onto it with more presstick so it doesn't jump off :D but is there an accessory that can get me around this?

I got one from the smaller Vodashop in Cresta (the one closest to Game) for something like R279, but I can't really remember now. It's got a suction pad that sticks on the window and works great - except some of the rubbers are coming loose. It also comes with a car charger - all made in China of course - but it's a German brand. The box doesn't say but the arm is bendable with a little strong right arm.

Don't go the Presstick route. The stuff gets soft and grotty in the sun.

*#0000# and check for updates. Do this before you do anything else with the phone, like updating phone numbers etc. I did the update via the WiFi, so you might need to set that up first or you can use your 3G.

Sorry, no. The box went in the bin. I seem to recall it was black and green - mostly black but that's as far as I can go with my failing memory

Nope, bought mine directly from Nokia 3 or 4 weeks ago, had to update from v20

Same here. Don't assume the local suppliers know anything or really care. They're box movers after all, and the local techies are under-qualified and under-paid.
For expertise talk to the users who are learning as they go along. And yes, I'm extremely cynical about local support.

A friend of mine got the 5800 about 3 weeks ago and it had the latest firmware on. he got it from a shop that gets a lot of people in each day, so that probably had something to do with it, such as the get new stock of the phone coming in than a quiet shop. but the firmware version is not a big deal, it is easy to update

I'm going to get a bit finicky and I certainly don't want to hijack this thread, but do you have any idea how difficult your message is to read and to understand? Properly structured sentences work best in a forum like this.

haha, sorry. half asleep, will fix it

i've tried opera mini on the phone and it looks much better than the nokia one, but for some reason after viewing a few websites the application closes, so whats a good web browser to use on this phone besides opera mini?

Hi Folks. Advice sought (as always). I'm considering getting a 5800 but have some questions. I'm due an upgrade at the moment so want to get a new phone in the next few days. I've read the first 20 pages of this thread and then just couldn't read anymore.
My reason for wanting this phone is that my iPod died recently and I want a device that can hold/play my music. I've always had Nokia and don't really want to change to iPhone.

- It seems that it now comes with GPS built in (5800 Navigation). Is this available in South Africa and does it come with 1 yr free navigation license like the E71's?
- I'm a heavy SMS and email user. What is the messaging interface like? I send about 30 emails from my phone a day (ex-BlackBerry, now E71).

It comes with 6 month Voice Navigation License. Nokia Maps is average. I'm going to try the Garmin plug-in.

IMO, full touch screens are very clumsy and tedious. Cool Touch Screen Qwerty Keyboards but not quite refined. If you send a lot of messages, DON'T GET THE 5800. Nothing replaces buttons for speed. It's hard to use the phone on the go (including with a hands free), because dialing is clumsy, accessing phone book is a mission and Voice Dialling is crap.

Brilliant phone, but it would have been so much better if it had a slide out keyboard like the n97, but that would be too much to ask considering it's price.

Opera Mini is a little problematic on this phone. When scrolling through pages on the web be careful not to go too close to the top and bottom of the screen with the stylus, for some reason it closes the browser down.

@ Carbon_Fibre - Thanks. I'll check out the N97.
