NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

Opera Mini is a little problematic on this phone. When scrolling through pages on the web be careful not to go too close to the top and bottom of the screen with the stylus, for some reason it closes the browser down.

perhaps you should give the signed version a try. i dont seem to have this problem with mine

+1. I seem to have that problem too. But Opera Mini is brilliant. I tend to use it even when I'm around my wifi network

Hi Folks. Advice sought (as always). I'm considering getting a 5800 but have some questions. I'm due an upgrade at the moment so want to get a new phone in the next few days. I've read the first 20 pages of this thread and then just couldn't read anymore.
My reason for wanting this phone is that my iPod died recently and I want a device that can hold/play my music. I've always had Nokia and don't really want to change to iPhone.

- It seems that it now comes with GPS built in (5800 Navigation). Is this available in South Africa and does it come with 1 yr free navigation license like the E71's?
- I'm a heavy SMS and email user. What is the messaging interface like? I send about 30 emails from my phone a day (ex-BlackBerry, now E71).

I think it's a great phone albeit flawed and takes a little time getting used to.
- It comes with GPS and a six month Nokia maps licence only. I don't like the maps app at all and much prefer Garmin. Another freebie that came with mine was a R200 Nokia music voucher.
- It's a great music phone - sound is good - and comes with an 8Gb card upgradable to 16Gb. Unlike the iPhone (spit, spit) it's got stereo Bluetooth which I use with my Gear4 Bluetooth headset for gym. No wires for me, thanks.
- I'm not a big messager, but you have a multiple of messaging input options all based on the touch screen. I mostly use the full screen qwerty in landscape mode with the stylus which I find quickest for me. You can also try two fingers which also works. There's also the option of handwriting recognition input but I have to slow down because my handwriting is a scrawl. The mini-qwerty in portrait is useless, while a further option is an alphanumeric keypad. I guess it all depends if you can make the switch to touchscreen. I can't say for you.

Except that the back button feature in the Nokia browser is miles better than Opera.

No way. It reloads the previous page. That's quite annoying to me. Opera displays a cached version of your entire session history.

When I used the Nokia browser I really began to feel sorry for people on data bundles. Virtually every page is at least 500kb. If you've got 250mb or 500mb on a 3GB Bundle it's not going to last very long with basic web browsing. Example: Goal.com. Home Page 1.2MB, every other page 600kb. So just for daily viewing of 10 stories = 7MB. For 30 days, that's 210MB. Crazy.

Unless you're using Wifi, the Nokia Web Browser is pointless. With Wifi, it's pretty good for a phone. Display is great cos of the awesome screen. It is slow and hangs quite often though.

anybody here try gdesk on there phone? wondering if there is a background application that always has to be running

Huh? The back button on the Nokia browser on mine shows up previously opened pages which I can quickly scroll between and choose. What's frustrating is there's no forward button. I don't think Opera's got it either.

As for these so-called data bundles, we're being royally screwed by the phone companies. At least if I get pomped, I'd like to enjoy it. That's not the case here and I never use them. WiFi only for me.

Time now for a wishlist:
1. I'd really like a calendar application that integrates with GPS ie I'd like to have an appointment in my calendar and also then have my GPS tell me where it is, without having to switch between applications. Anyone heard of such a thing?
2. I'd really like my WiFi app - either the built-in one one or WeFi - to remember my hidden WiFi network settings and autolog me in when I want. I can't seem to do it and I'm a bit stumped. It's really tedious having to re-enter name and password every time. It's not a problem when I broadcast SSID in the clear, but I also believe in security through anonymity (plus WPA2). Any thoughts or advice?

Yes, the back button on nokia browser is cool because you can scroll through the previous windows, but it reloads the page if you click on it.

Opera's back button works perfectly. The History function also works brilliantly and is very quick.

That would be cool.

I wish I had Exchange rather than just plain Outlook so I could sync my outlook calendar

for those who are interested. here is a website that shows some new applications and other info for the 5800 http://www.tube5800.com/

I'll go through my bookmarks, but http://dailymobile.se has a really decent forum.

And looking at this site, there's some really cool stuff coming out of Nokia - the 800 pound gorilla is moving. Sometimes there's no point in looking at the latest stuff because no matter what you get, you're immediately behind the technology curve. I just hope Nokia gets some decent Windows software developers soon.
