NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

Is it just me or is it bloody frustrating that they dont improve the home screen? I love my 5800 but when i look at the WM & Android devices, our homescreens are absolutely crap.

You can also customise it with themes and your own backgrounds. My current fave theme is DarkO by Libertine. It's orange but all the icons are nice and clear.

You can also try the commercial iPhone theme that's free for trial at the moment (V1.0 only and I forget the name), but I detested it. If I wanted an Apple product (spit, spit) I would have bought one. Plus, it's a bit of a bitch to get rid of.

That said, it would be nice to populate the home screen with more of your favourite apps. I'm loathe to experiment much more though.

called MyPhone

I won a competition on tube5800.com to get the Windows 7 "mod" :D

Slingshot, are you saying that Voda hasn't even released v30 yet for you guys??

Is there not a nokia store somewhere in Cape Town? Get them to debrand your phone.

No Vodacom is still living in the dark ages. I'm seriously considering debranding my phone, it sounds fairly easy, I just need to make sure there are no risks involved except for Vodacom voiding my warranty.

I have a vodacom nokia 5800 and changed my product code the day I got it. Updated to v31 now. As for the warranty technically it does probably void your it. But I opened my phone a few months back and accidentally cut off the touch screen connector. Took it in to Vodacare (Obviously without telling how it broke) and it was fixed for free under warranty even with a changed code. They kindly replaced my entire screen. :p They would have noticed the changed code since they updated the firmware as well. So I don't think they care too much. And if they did they would have the newest firmware ready for their clients.

Mxit 5.8.2 much better than the previous version.

Just as I convinced myself that de-branding my 5800 is the right thing to do (like not paying your tv license), I realised that I can't do it under Ubuntu. #$(*#%$!!!!

VirtualBox 3.0. Get it from Sun (not OSE edition), and enable USB interface. That should get you going.

Got the Capdase case and Screen Protector as I said earlier.

Long story short, the cover is quite cool, but the screen protector didn't even last a week, yep, I'm serious. The bubbles never eased out and it's completely busted at this stage (I'm in IT so I actually do scuffle around a lot).

That said, what screen protector can I buy that will last?

Mine's still going strong. Its the one in the first/second post of this thread:)

Thanks for the idea, Installing it now. I've been meaning to setup VirtualBox for another program as well, but was trying to avoid Windows after going all-out Ubuntu. Seems like I just can't get rid of bloody Bill Gates...

What product code are you using currently?

Would you post your Software Version and Custom Version and Type numbers here?

Tip for obtaining product codes

As those of us who have changed the product codes on our 5800's using JAF etc know, one of the main problems is obtaining the correct product codes to obtain the latest updates. Google "Navifirm" and download it, runs quite nicely and gives the latest firmware versions and product codes for every Nokia phone. I would post a download link but I don't have one, had to join a forum to obtain it directly. Sure that a bit of googling will find a download link, and then you'll never have to look for a product code again! :)

To quote the developer:

"NAVIFIRM is the ultimate all-purpose tool for downloading Nokia firmware images, obtaining lists of product codes, and finding the right product code for your phone. NAVIFIRM downloads all this straight from Nokia's servers so you don't have to wait for people to post data packages and lists of product codes.

NAVIFIRM is useful for just about anyone:

End users: Find product codes to use with NSS/NSU
Journalists: Be the first to know when new firmware hits NSU
Developers: Download ROM images for extracting files

Care Suite/Phoenix/box users: Download ROM images to flash

Additional NSU servers can be added by editing Main.cs in the source code."

Used it about an hour ago again, found the product code for which the latest firmware version for the 5800 had been released (31......), changed the code (0552438) (Red, British Isles) and presto, new firmware available via NSU..... :)

Hope this helps

Does anyone have a step by step guide to get mxit working on my 5800. I downloaded and installed it but i keep getting error messages. First time i try to log in it tells me the server is busy and the second time it says "connection error. Check your GPRS settings".
My GPRS and 3g is correctly setup for web browsing.
