NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

Yeah, I'm looking at the HTC Legend myself. Have you tried disabling the Phonelocator to see if that helps?

I don't want to disable it when I leave the house. I'll try disabling it while I'm at home later though. Pity there isn't another decent free GPS tracker I can try.

Wouldn't be effective against a thief. It can be seen in the task manager and disabled easily. It doesn't start automatically when the phone is switched on. Plus having the GPS on constantly would kill the battery too fast.
Periodic Phonelocator has its own major flaws but it does have a chance of working.

Since I'm home now I'll start the test and remove Periodic.

does anybody know what media player i can download to watch movies etc on my phone ? i also have a N97 and can't find a movie player

Do me a favor, try find Wanless drive, Durban / Ethekwini
Had to go to a mates place (from south coast side) and Ovi could not find it.. then I was on the phone for 45 minutes with them directing my confused ass over the telephone.
Upon arrival, I opened Ovi, and asked it what my current location was.. lo and behold - Wanless drive
:wtf:

Hmm, I've had mine (the standard RM-356) for 6 months now. Flashed it with EURO 1 black firmware [can't handle this yebo gogo bull$h!t]. Red line on the outside, black and silver in the software (minimalist) :) Issues, I've had none. Use Garmin MobileXT for navigation, when I flashed from SA's v20 to Europe's v40, huge difference in the lock speeds. Had an E65 before this one, terribly slow, being an SE fan it didn't take long for me to hate it but nothing beats Symbian imo. Now with the hardware platform they used for the 5800, 5230 etc they fixed many issues, and the new hardware design they put in the E72, E55 is even better.

Yea I've had similar problems. The search tool is utter s**t. See an earlier post from me:

Sometimes to cope with the crap search on Ovi Maps, I open up Google Maps and do the search there so I can see where the place is.
Then I switch back to Ovi Maps and manually select that spot on the map.

You can get the Google Maps app by browsing to m.google.com on your phone.

I've given up. I convert my videos using Nokia Video Converter (part of Nokia PC Suite). It's painful though

Yeah but I see kit download like 70KB etc. Do they charge me for this? Or is the GPS data free?

You're an SGM and you ask this question 8-) I had the same from some fogies the other day (I'm one too, these days) and no, GPS is free since it operates independently of the Internet. Trouble is, our phones - like the 5800 - it can take a while to acquire a full set of coordinating signals (provided courtesy of the US military/industrial complex). I prefer to use assisted GPS (AGP) which adds just a little overhead and uses the cellphone towers to assist with locating your coordinates a bit quicker. Quite a lot quicker, actually.
Anyway, it's rugby time. Go Stormers!

I have had my 5800 for three months now and while I find it somewhat frustrating (compared to SE P1i) it does it's job well enough. What I am strugling with however is that I dont see the caller identity. I cant see the number calling me even if it is in my phonebook. I have tried resetting the fone to default, but nada. What setting am I missing? Any help out there?

Was with cell c but then I ported to vodacom. Much better coverage, but less support.
Several members at work have the same phone and I seem to have the same setting but still no joy. What am I missing (apart from my sanity)?

give this a try

- contacts list so all your names show up

- options

- settings

- contacts to display

- phone memory only (not both or sim only as the same problem occurs!)

Do you have the official site? If it can play divx, wmv, mp4 etc without needing to convert or download any codecs, I'd be willing to pay for it.
