NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

NOS does not pick up firmware update available

Running v40 and if I check from my phone Nokia reports v50 available, but Ovi Suite says no updates available. What gives?

Even without Periodic Phonelocator installed, the damn phone still freezes sometimes. Come on, what kind of "smartphone" freezes when trying to type a friggin SMS?
I know software crashes, but this is too much. Windows XP was never this bad. Would be a great phone if it was actually reliable.

I leave the Nokia email app open for quick access, is the freezing a memory issue?

Will be glad when I can replace this thing, I hope Android isn't this bad.

Maddmatt, are you running a java app in the background? I've had those freeze on me once or twice, but hardly anything is able to freeze best taskman...

mine hardly ever freezes, what firmware are you on ?

i can type an sms or email just as fast as a normal touchpad phone !

maybe do a factory re-set and then update the firmware.

Only app I leave in the background now is the Nokia email app. Since doing the hard reset I can't get an email notification unless I use the contacts bar homescreen, which looks crap IMO (why can't we get the N97 homescreen?). But before that I only had Periodic Phonelocator in the background.
Latest firmware. In fact I don't think my phone froze much when I first got it with the V3xxxxxx firmware, but I'd hate to use that again.

This phone's just been disappointing me more and more over time. Maybe I'll try a firmware re-install through the PC Suite. If that doesn't help then this phone's gotta go.
The more I look at Android phones on the net the more I want one.

You could always use JAF and Navifirm to get back to a previous version... EDIT: No you can't. Downgrading kills the phone...

To folks with the sms/screen freeze problem.

Remember to calibrate your screen after updating using the stylus.

I've had the same on v3 4 and 5 and the calibrate always works for me.

Settings-phone-touch input and very bottom is the calibrate option.

Ciao. tera :D

Ok re-installed firmware yesterday using the PC Suite. Will see how that goes.

I want to install a hacked firmware though, specifically the latest XTE Blaze since it finally gives the phone a homescreen that doesn't suck.

And then perhaps mod the homescreen to something from here:
http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.php/topic,23514.0.html

But how the hell do I do it? I've been searching for a simple guide but all I can find are these long-winded guides that link to a bunch of programs and even more guides.
Is there any (relatively) simple way to do this?

Depends what firmware version you have. Check the modding forum on dailymobile for some good threads...

wow, some of those look sweet.
But a simple way to get that would be cool.

So the phone hasn't been giving me trouble for a while, this is good.

Anyway, I'm now using an awesome new homescreen. For those who want a simple way to get it, do this:

1. Take your pick of the one you want from the first post here:
http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.php/topic,23514.1185.html
(I'm using number 7, Orange & OraTsu HS (Nokia Icons) V1.10 by e-ZaRs)

2. Get it signed with a developer cert. before you can install it. Go here to do it: https://www.symbiansigned.com/app/page/public/openSignedOnline.do
You will need the IMEI of your phone. They will give you a file which will only install on your phone.

2A. Alternatively, if that doesn't work, go to http://cer.opda.cn/en/ and apply for a developer certificate. Once you have one, you can click "Signing" on your certificate and sign online, or you can download the certificate and tools do sign it yourself on your PC/phone.

3. Install the signed sis/sisx file on you phone. Then go into Settings -> Personal -> Home screen -> Home screen theme. Choose OraTsu for the customisable home screen that supports widgets. You may see a some other new options there which may or may not work. Try them to see if there's something you'll like.

Now you should have an awesome new home screen. Click the up arrow on the bottom right to add widgets. There are 3 pages of widgets you can access by scrolling left/right.
You can hold you finger on a placed widget to delete it, move it, or access options of it has any.
You an add as many widgets as you like, and you can scroll up and down the page.

Maddmatt.

Is it possible to have the home screen, but with your preferred theme?

Of course. The theme and homescreen are completely different. The main differences between all those home screen downloads are specific to the homescreen itself - different icons, different borders/transparency around widgets and other parts, and some other minor modifications. Your themes and wallpapers are not affected.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot then :)
