The handset has one other advantage over the iPhone: it's expected to cost less than half the price. That alone means it'll probably outsell the Apple. But an iPhone it's not.
Nokia is finally set to introduce a touch-screen-based smartphone - sans keypad or keyboard - to take on the Apple iPhone 3G.
The new Nokia handset, the 5800 XpressMusic, isn't as sleek as the iPhone - it still looks more like a Nokia brick - but it's packed with features, including 3,6 Mbit/s 3G, an accelerometer for auto-rotate and a built-in GPS receiver.
Unfortunately, the software does not match up to the iPhone's. Though it has a competent user interface, and people familiar with Symbian will find their way around quickly, it lacks the polish and sheer ease of use of the iPhone.
But the 5800 has one strong feature that is missing from the Apple device: it features Nokia's new 'Comes With Music' service which offers users unlimited access for a year to the entire catalogue of the Nokia Music Store.
Not in SA, though. Despite plans by Nokia to launch the Music Store here, it won't be available before the 5800 goes on sale sometime in the first quarter of 2009.
This will make the device less attractive to SA consumers.
