Hi People,

I'm entitled to an upgrade on my Vodacom contract and, after investigating all the phones out there, I decided to wait for the Nokia 6280 since I like the high-res screen, slide form-factor, and the 3G and EDGE support.

Does anyone have an idea when it will become available? All of the VodaShops I've contacted have different information (mostly just a "I don't know"). I've been able to get the price, so I expect it should be available sometime soon. But like most gadget-geeks, I'm a very impatient man! :D

Cheers,
Theodor

It's still in test, failed first time around. Nokia supplied new software, so it's gone back in testing.

If it pass, I'd say availability around May, but it's a guestimate at this point.

Thanks for the quick reply :-)
I'll guess I'll go for something else then, since I can't wait that long (my wife wants my old cellphone and has been nagging me lately). Maybe a Motorola V3x...

Just out of curiousity: what do these tests entail, and why do they take so long?

I don't have a full list of all the tests but they mostly revolve around the core functionalities. They don't take that long, rather it's the whole distribution process that's lengthy with stock being ordered, distributed, etc.

The last time I looked more than a thousand handsets have been tested, with more and more being added into the queue every week. Vodacom has a full-time testing facility (called the MTTC) just to keep ahead with all the testing.

Don't you get involved with the testing sometimes V3G? ;)

There is a very formal process and methodology the handsets must go through and this is run by the MTTC. Very professional bunch with lots of gizmo's and Faraday cages, etc.

Sometimes I get involved, but more from a tire-kicking exercise or when a really interesting handset comes out, like the JasJar for example.

I did some more online investigating and found that many users (lots actually) had reliability problems with the 6280.
So I ended up going for the Sony Ericsson W900i and so far I'm very happy.
