Nokia 6680 network issue

Vodacom have been talking to Nokia on these problems, specifically around:

- A complete loss of network where coverage has been confirmed to be
adequate.
- Over frequent 3G to 2G handover in areas where the 3G coverage should be
adequate.
- Over frequent passive cell re-selection.
- Software instability.

I've been experimenting with Celltrack and found it strange that my phone should switch from a 3G signal to a GSM signal on the same tower.
I can only assume that's because 3G opperates on a different frequency and has different properties.

The way I read the "Over frequent 3G to 2G handover in areas where the 3G coverage should be adequate" bit, seems to imply it's a bug in the phone and should not do this.

Anyone been able to get their handsets upgraded at Nokia to 4.04.07?

Sounds like the new firmware is available at Nokia.

Being a Vodacom VLive handset this is obviously the VLive branded version.

Once you've upgraded, please post your views here.

Hi - handover on between 2G and 3G on the same tower is actually quite common. 3G coverage is not as consistent as 2G because 3G cells breathe, changing the coverage area on the fly continously. When the cell breathes - you may drop your connection and revert back to 2G until the 3G cell has "exhaled" again. Check out my post in this thread for a more detailed explanation :

the nokia 6680 has a problem (to my knowledge, it has not been solved yet), when ure on a voice call and u move from a 3g covered area (+2g) to a non 3g covered area (+2g) the phone drops the current call.

from what ive heard ppl experiance the symptoms uve spoken about above.

i have a samsung z500, i have a similar issue. when i move out of 3g coverage, my call does not drop. but it has a signal and plays dead just like u said, no fix so far

nokia 6680

Hi all

The Nokia 6680 must have been one of Nokia's flops as i have heard of hundreds of phones been sent in for repair all about software and the memory cards however nokia only warrant the memory cards for 3 months.
That saves them from paying for new cards as the clients only discover or realize there cards are faulty after play for a while that more than likely takes 3 months will all the features they tried to cram into one phone.

Thanks

Turtle

Got my Nokia 6680 today. Hope I won't be sorry ...

Before I even start using it I'd like to upgrade the firmware. Where do I get the latest version?
