I've searched the archives, but there is not a lot on the setup of the E71 out there (except on international blogs).

The salesman at Autopage was useless and told me I don't need any data to download my e-mail to my E71 (gmail). So I stopped right there and I'm hoping for better advice from the mybroadband community.

Details: E71 through Autopage, MTN, Talk350, no data at the moment.

1) How do you set up the nokia maps and gps? What does it cost and does it use data?
2) Mail for exchange - is this push e-mail or do I have control over which messages I download?
3) Same as above, but using an internet account (gmail)
4) Any other setup goodies I'm not aware of.
5) I have a MTN 2GB data card that expires in June, so will then convert my data package to my pone and will be able to access the internet through my laptop using my phone. Will you advise it, or should I upgrade to HSDPA 7.2?

PS: I live in the Cape Town CBD

My E71 is from VDC. GPS and Maps worked when I switched it on. I came with 1 year free Maps/GPS content from Nokia (at least I think it's from Nokia as opposed to VDC).

For GPS you can choose with internet mode (A-GPS / assisted GPS) or without. Both modes worked first time on my E71 with no setup required.

I use POP3 and IMAP. Both worked first time after putting in the same settings as on my previous phone. I don't use Exchange but the other systems let you control push, pull, automatic or manual download, headers or just some content etc all with settings on the phone side.

Mine shipped with a gmail for Nokia app. I used it on a previous Nokia (E51) at it was great. I don't use gmail anymore though so have not set it up.

Hold down # for shortcut to silent mode.
Hold down * to toggle blueetooth on or off.
Double click the bottom left button to lock numeric mode.
Predictive text is irritating to get used to so I leave it off.

That's what I have. Not sure about the data stuff.

1) Nokia maps are all on the card. You only use a TINY amount of data for the A-GPS. You can turn it off too as Waaib said. You can also install google maps (this uses lots of data) or Garmin Mobile (no data).
2) Push email- Mail for exchange you need to sync so not push. you can set it to sync automatically. It downlaods all text emails. It will only download the attachments if you selct them. You can use emoze for full push email. It also does exchange. It used to be fully free, but now only for one email account (luckily I saved the free version).
3) Phone email client does gmail. really easy to setup compared to other phones. Just username and password. They have lots of settings on there server. There is also emoze or the gmail app.

Other setup - you can use the phone as a VOIP phone out of the box with the included gizmo (nice integration from phone book etc) or use another app like fring.

With regards to the Data - IINM, the E71 doesn't support 7.2 HSDPA, so it won't be worth it to upgrade to it.

The network doesn't support 7.2 either, so what difference does it make if the E71 supports it or not? In fact even the 3.6 is not really a lot of use for many users, as there isn't enough backhaul to get 3.6 most of the time, and let's face it, by the time Vodacom has 7.2 running smoothly, we'll all be one our next handset anyway.

I've found some great apps and tips at this blog in the past two days.

http://www.e71blog.com/

I've installed and got most things working just by reading the instructions on the blog.
All of these are great:

- Free-iSMS (the pick of the bunch - gives your sms's in conversation format)
- Nokia Maps 3
- Hack to remove Security Certificates
- Conversations
- Themes - various.

AWESOME E71 themes here - http://tehk7.wordpress.com/ (click the themes link at top of page)
- Touch (Vista) - black Vista look and feel
- N86 Light (Vista) - white Vista look and feel
