I have a dilemma. I am due an upgrade on my cellular contract and two fantastic new smartphones, Nokia’s E71 and Apple’s iPhone 3G, are both being released in August. Decisions, decisions. The E71 should be on store shelves in the next few days and, if the rumours are true, the iPhone will go on sale on August 22.

Nokia sent me an E71 review unit last week and I’m leaning towards choosing it over the iPhone. The 126g E71 is, in my view, the best handset that Nokia has ever produced. The successor to the E61 and E61i, this top-end e-mail phone has shrunk in size and weight but gained powerful new features, including built-in GPS (online SA maps with navigation available for a trial period of 12 months), 3,6Mbit/s HSDPA and Wi-Fi for super fast Internet access, and a full Qwerty keyboard.

Using the same battery as the E61i, Nokia has managed to cram the E71’s electronics into an impossibly small space. And the screen, though smaller than its predecessors, has a higher resolution and is therefore still fine for e-mail and Web browsing.

The phone is ready for use in companies: it supports Mail for Exchange and has built in mobile virtual private networking for accessing corporate intranets.

The SD card can be up to 8GB —2GB is supplied — making it a worthy music and multimedia device, too.

Though the E71 is smaller than the E61i, the keyboard is still surprisingly usable. Nokia has done a great job with this handset. If you need a phone for e-mail and Web browsing, the E71 is about the best there is right now. Superb.
