Packet data usage

Hi everyone, am new to the forum, in the IT business and this is my first post.

Am downloading a lot of podcasts on WiFi which is fine at ADSL prices but
every now and again find that when out of range I have done some browsing on 3G and the unfinished downloads have continued at the same time at R2/MB.

Is there a symbian s60 app that can monitor packet data and disconnect
the connection after a pre determined limit has been reached.

I think this would be usefull to prevent inadvertantly running up a large 3G bill
irrespective of what applications are been used where one might unintentionaly use the 3G connection.

A FEW E71 TIPS FOR SENDING TEXTS, MUSIC PLAYER, CONTACTS, AND MORE

A FEW E71 TIPS FOR SENDING TEXTS, MUSIC PLAYER, CONTACTS, AND MORE

We’re always looking for ways to be faster and more efficient in everything we do in life. The Nokia E71 essentially does this - makes my life easier. Besides all the major things it does for me, there are a ton of very minor features that we often overlook. I hate hassling with the small things that waste time and distract you from your overall goal. If you take some time to look for shortcuts and use them constantly they become second nature. I'm sure many of you already know these tips exist. But for new E71 users these shortcuts shortcuts should be very helpful.

Keep reading to see if these suggestions can help you out...

Creating & Sending A Message

First off I'll show you a faster way to select a contact. Instead of searching your address book you can simply start typing the contact's name in the "To:" field. After a few letters push the center d-pad button and a list of matches will pop up. If there is only one match the name will be entered automatically. As you can see below I started typing “Mario” to find my contact. All it took was two or three letters to narrow it down.

en added, simply push the Green Call Button to send the message. No need to push options>send.

Finding Music Faster With Typing & Scrolling

Another tip is with the E71 Music Player application. To find an artist or song just type the first few letters of what you’re looking for and the list will begin filtering, just like the contacts trick I showed you earlier.

This next trick I want to show you is usually new to most people. When scrolling down the list of songs or artists you’re already holding down (or up) the navigation button. Now let go and quickly push and hold it again and it will scroll even faster. You should see a “fast” label pop up in the top right.

Type To Start A Calendar Or Alarm Entry

Lastly, when you launch the Calendar or Clock application don’t fiddle with options to start what you need to add. If you’re adding a calendar entry start typing the subject and it will begin your entry. When setting your alarm just start typing the time you want and push OK. Done!

Maybe you’ve heard of these… maybe you haven’t. I know there’s more but right now I can’t think of them.

If you know any others let us know! For more check out this article I wrote awhile back ago.

E71 & FACEBOOK MESSAGING: EMOZE DOES THE JOB, ALONG WITH GMAIL, CORPORATE EMAIL, ETC.

E71 & FACEBOOK MESSAGING: EMOZE DOES THE JOB, ALONG WITH GMAIL, CORPORATE EMAIL, ETC.

Perhaps the most common question I see from Nokia E71 owners is "How can I check my email?". Sure there is the default mailbox that came with the E71, but as many of you know it's extremely weak, slow, and inneffecient. Nokia's latest solution is Nokia Messaging, but I know first hand that many of you are not happy with what it has to offer. There are a handful of other applications that handle email, but one in particular has really stood out to me. Emoze offers a little more, allowing you to send/recieve Facebook messages directly from your E71 smartphone. Read more for the details...

Emoze is a big player in the push email business and they are currently making waves. They have pushed the biggest dog out of the way by beating Blackberry at it's own game, Emoze can deliver email faster then Blackberry. I have recently learned (even though it's old news) that Emoze can do more than just provide you access to email and sync your calendar/contacts, it also has Facebook messaging capabilities. This is a big deal for the millions of Facebook users. No longer are you chained to your PC browser for Facebook messaging, you can now get it in email format on your phone. This should help most of you cater to your "social" side.

Download the Emoze app by going to m.emoze.com from your Nokia E71. You will pick Facebook from a list and input your Facebook user name and password. At that point you are ready to start sending messages as if you were logged into Facebook at home on your computer. Within a couple minutes Emoze will have downloaded your current messages and you can read and reply to them as well. I haven't seen any other service that can pull this off.

The people behind Emoze worked quite hard so you can load it on dozens of handsets including Symbian, Windows Mobile and perhaps most importantly, nearly all handsets that support java applications. The java version will work on a variety of popular handsets from manufacturers like Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia including S40. This way you can connect with your friends and family who aren't fortunate enough to own a Nokia Eseries device.

It's nice to see email companies bridging the gap between work and play. Emoze can also connect to the following email types:

- Outlook
- Gmail
- Hotmail
- Facebook messaging
- Your own home or ISP email account
- OWA Corporate email

Head over to www.emoze.com to give it a try.

Update to New Firmware

What about it do you want it revive?

I cant update to the latest firmware. It downloads to about 40% and then fails.
I tried about 6 times on different days.

I'm thinking that you want to update to the 210.21.006 FW?

I am still on the older firmware and I am pretty much happy with it.
Anyhow, make sure that you have a good reliable connection, I cant really tell why you cant update, can you describe your problem?

YOUTUBE ON E71: OFFICIAL SYMBIAN APPLICATION NOW AVALIABLE IN .SIS FORMAT

YOUTUBE ON E71: OFFICIAL SYMBIAN APPLICATION NOW AVALIABLE IN .SIS FORMAT

One of the most sought after features of mobile users in today's world is the ability to watch Youtube away from the computer. In the past, us E71 owners and all Symbian users have relied heavily on 3rd party applications like Mobitubia, Emtube, and java applications. They often did the job very good, but there is hardly any support of these applications since they've been out for so long. Mobitubia is still usable, but I believe Emtube has been discontinued.

An E71 reader by Colin (thanks dude!) sent me an email last night letting me know about Youtube's brand spanking new Symbian S60 3rd edition Youtube .sis application. Shocking, I didn't even see an announcement on the Google Mobile blog. It's great to see huge companies like Google and Youtube supporting Nokia E71 and S60 users.

I've been playing with the new E71 Youtube application for about a half an hour now and all I can say is it's slick, fast, and easy to use. I'm getting almost no buffer time with my AT&T 3g data connection. I haven't tried it yet over edge or WLAN, but you do have the option change access points. Only negative I've seen so far is that you cannot download the file after you've watched it. This application uses data entirely, so be sure you have a good data plan or use WLAN.

Yes.
I've got DSL and it downloads at full speed. Half way through it fails telling me to check usb, reboot, etc. Tried everything but still no success.:(
Its frustrating.

I havent tried that, I am still using the one that came with the phone v2.0.
But I will give it a shot. Oh, and I am also still on FW 200.21.118 27-11-2008. I must admit that the only problem with this is when I power on the phone. It takes forever before I can see the log in screen and sometimes it turns to be a pain on a neck.

I am still not convinced with this new FW though, I will wait for the next one. And I also hate having to reinstall everything.

Just a question, upgrading to this Beta wont compromise my 12months licence will it?

Thanks

cross posting ...

I've found some great apps and tips at this blog in the past two days.

http://www.e71blog.com/

I've installed and got most things working just by reading the instructions on the blog.
All of these are great:

- Free-iSMS (the pick of the bunch - gives your sms's in conversation format)
- Nokia Maps 3
- Conversations
- Themes - various.

- Hack to remove Security Certificates is apparently a illegal spoofing site.

AWESOME E71 themes here - http://tehk7.wordpress.com/ (click the themes link at top of page)
- Touch (Vista) - black Vista look and feel
- N86 Light (Vista) - white Vista look and feel

Maps 3 been on my phone and syncing to ovi for the past 5 days. All working great.

I really like being able to create routes on the PC and sync them to the phone. Best feature for me.

According to Nokia Beta Labs:

Licences

Your travel guide licences are not valid in the beta version of Maps 3.0. However, the guide licences will be valid again in the final version of Maps 3.0.
If you want to continue using the licences, use Maps 1.0 or 2.0, or wait for the final version of Maps 3.0.
Your navigation licences work normally in the beta version of Maps 3.0.
To check the validity of your licences, select Options > Extras > My licences.

I feel uneasy having to temper with my licence.

Those are probably unsigned applications. You may wanna go here to request for the Certificate and the softwares to sign the applications:

Imserba OR Ipmart-forum.

On the site it tells you which setting to choose etc for unlocking the certificate. I followed the instructions line by line and it worked fine.
