Nokia E71Tips and Tricks

NOTHING!!!! Just digg the concept, UI, userfriendly - so, pretty much hopeful that they will add great apps, esp that developers can add their stuff.

Google Mobile App for S60 - quick access to Google services

I'm sure you all know the Google Nokia Home Page quick access.
Its got a face lift and looks great.

Google today announced the release of Google Mobile App for S60 (3rd Edition), which allows quick access to Google search and offers shortcuts to a number of Google's other services. Features include a homescreen shortcut and automatic location context, via GPS or cell positioning, for searches. Incidentally Google's S60 YouTube application was also silently updated to version 2.0.17. Read on for more details.

Google Mobile App for S60
Google Mobile App for S60 is, effectively, an update from and an extension to the Google S60 Search application announced last year.

The homescreen shortcut uses either 'c' key or the 'pencil' key depending on which device you are using. There's an optional prompt that pops up a reminder of the shortcut (see first screenshot - it used just be the pencil key on supported devices), but this can be turned off if you wish.

...and herego to m.google.com from your phone to get it.

After I did my hard reset the other day I have not been able to get opera mini to run - it didn't appear in my installations folder, but was there if I looked in the app manager. Trying to open from app manager didn't work, nor did trying to remove it. Re-installing it was also fruitless.

While looking at the nokiausa.com (in the hopes that they might have newer firmware) I saw an app called MIDlet Restorer, and lo and behold it restored opera mini to it's former glory. It's at http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/software/Nokia_MIDletRestorer.sis

Have just updated my phone to the newest firmware 210.21.006, the first time since getting the phone late 2008. Backed up and all, but after reloading, my Opera Mini has disappeared. Under Installations, lists "Opera menu" but clicking on that takes me to the Vlive site!

Colin62, have downloaded MIDlet Restorer. Having done so, no change to Opera. Is it useful in my case too, and if so, how do I use it?

Have not tried downloading again, but will do that if cannot get my original back again.

Backed up and all, but after reloading, my Opera Mini has disappeared.

Downloaded Opera 4.2 again, so am happy now. Much easier to read bulletin boards via Opera because can scroll down screen by screen and not just line by line.

Internet Radio Software Upgrade Failure

Talking about upgrades ... DO NOT UPGRADE THE INTERNET RADIO APP! Not even when prompted to do so! Or, at the very least, be very careful. May be ok if downloaded to the phone, but not to the memory card.

I followed the prompt to upgrade, indicating it should download to my memory card. After that, the app came up with a failure message, saying it is "not supported". After searching, I came up with this long thread on the Nokia forum
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com...thread.id=41066&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

Various methods of recovery are recommended on that thread, the main one being to remove certain sys/bin files, but that was beyond my capability. One post intrigued me - that the app works if the memory card is removed first. That was indeed the case for me! When I put the memory card back in, it did not work again.

Today I thought I would try that again, but this time instead of hot removing the card, I went via tools to memory card and clicked on "remove the card". Again, the app worked with the card out. I put the card back in, and lo and behold now it does work with the card in!! I am very relieved, because I listen fequently listen to either the BBC or NPR.

Anyway, be warned!

New firmware 400.21.013 is available.
I'm busy updating now. :)

Yes make sure you install the new OVI suite to be able to download the new V4 firmware.
Nokia updater doesn’t recognize V4 for some reason or the other...

E72... http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_e72-review-422.php

Nice list of improvements over the E71:

* S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2
* 5 MP Camera with VGA video at 15fps
* 600MHz CPU
* An Optical trackpad in the centre of the d-pad
* A 3.5mm audio jack
* Digital compass
* Accelerometer
* microUSB charging (as well as 2mm charging)
* Active noise cancellation for calls
* Around 180MB more free flash memory on disk C
* High speed USB
* Flashlight (like the E63)

Only negative I see is the less free RAM due to FP2? & the still same 2,4" QVGA screen...

I've managed to lose the thing on the home screen that allows you to see how many unread sms's are in your inbox, and to jump to the first one with one click. It used to sit near the bottom of the screen on the right. If anyone understands what I am talking about and knows how to get it back, I'd appreciate some help.

That sounds like a programmable key - mine says camera - so I guess someone changed it.
