I bought a Nokia Lumia 520 from Edgars today for R1999 on prepaid. Asking the lady if the phone was locked she replied no. When I got back home from Cape Town (I live in Worcester) I inserted my 8ta sim and it did not work. So I tested my wife's Vodacom sim and it worked! Why is a prepaid phone locked, I paid for it? Now what can I do with the phone? I refuse to go to Vodacom.

Its not actually allowed. Its very illegal and I can't imagine that icasa will put their sticker on it if its network locked.....

I bought a Lumia 620 today on MTN for R2999 and any simcard works in mine even 8ta too.

It's not illegal, the proposed amendments to the bill that would have made it illegal were never passed. The network operators agreed not to do it though.

Call Vodacom support and ask them if the device is locked.

Has Windows Phone been tested on the 8ta network?

Do they actually sell Windows Phone handsets?

Edgars phoned Nokia and they said it's something to do with there software on the phone. As nobody at Edgars told me that it's only for Vodacom sim they refunded me. Will get one from MTN as they usurer me it will work on 8ta.

You need WiFi to download an app called Network Setup+(thought it was installed standard though) which will sort your network issue out.

Can you explain more about this app and how this will sort out the problem?

Hey mate, just went through the settings on my phone as the App I mentioned isn't for Windows Phone 8. Will put a MTN sim in my phone and report back to see if it works. Bought the phone at vodacom.

Update : MTN sim didn't read at first. Installed "Lumia Pusher" App and updated all the Nokia software. Reset phone. Went to Settins->Network+ and Selected "MTN" :). Worked after that.

Don't know if it will work for you but it's worth a shot I suppose. WiFi was used for the download.
