Nokia Lumia 800 on MTN

My apologies, I posted my question in the broadband forum, it should be here.

Hi

Do any of you or perhaps someone from MTN have any information on the status of the Lumia 800 at MTN, when it will be released?

I am due for an upgrade in exactly 3 weeks from today and I am looking forward to getting this phone from MTN on the Anytime packages. A friend of mine told me there is a story going roud that MTN are launching the Lumia 800 in 1 - 2 weeks time. Can anyone confirm this?

If MTN will not be offering the phone, I will have to buy it cash, and let's face it, it is cheaper getting it on the anytime packages rather. And I don't want to go to the blue/red team on the contract they are giving just to get the phone.

Does anyone have any info to save me from this turmoil?

Vodacom and Nokia have a 6 month sole supplier deal. So most likely it'll be on MTN in another four months. By that time, the Lumia 900 will be out
 
If this is true, I am amazed that Nokia would enter such a deal, they are already struggling in the smartphone market, yet they decide to decrease their footprint and distribution and proceed to enter into such a deal with Vodacom. This is extremely disappointing. A lot of people are waiting on the other networks, as the contract with Vodacom is is a per minute contract and is a business call contract and the usual ***** contracts you get from Vodacom. As you mentioned, by that time the Lumia 900 will be out. This is exactly the same type of business approach that is causing RIM to fail globally, all hopes of getting rid of my Blackberry for the Lumia is now gone. Only option left is to buy the phone cash.

EPIC FAIL Nokia. Clearly you are not interested in reaching the masses. It's amazing the kind of business decisions these big companies take. Utterly dissapointed.
 
its 6 weeks, NOT 6 months and it ends at the end of March. 6 weeks from the 7th of Feb
 
I almost had cardio vascular failure just know, I was already browsing the forbidden web pages of the red one whose name must not be spoken. Thanks iceman23, much appreciated. I will then wait on the others until the 6 week period has passed. Thanks again.
Now I can look forward to the Nokia again. Blood pressure returning to normal.

There are many more deals available...not just the Business contract.

The phone itself is pretty impressive considering i don't like windows OS. The problem lies with the zune software required to transfer content, Nokia have gone down a similar path as Apple by restricting how content is obtained. When you load videos onto the phone, the zune software converts the video regardless of which format & that takes forever. Another annoying issue is not being able to receive anything via bluetooth.
 
Apparently this is going to change in Windows Phone 8. Hopefully the Lumia is upgradeable...
 
Firmware is out

The MTN firmware for the Lumia 800 appeared on Nokia's servers today:

MTN ZA - jumped straight to the 12070 build and they have the black, cyan, magenta AND white options available, so it must be pretty soon

Yeah it has appered on navi firm just checked now here is proof hope it comes soon my dad need a upgrade from his Bold 9700

I cant wait for this phone, i have been waiting since February for it... Went to MTN store on the weekend and confirmed that it may be possibly available end of March..(Fingers Crossed Guys)
 
why the END of March? I thought the launch was end Jan and that the exclusivity ended yesterday. More waiting. Still haven't seen a compelling contract to take it on. Perhaps one of the 8ta packages with some data.

I had been steadfastly waiting for the Lumia 800 and could not stop reading, despite the length of that article and its comments that followed. I believe I will, for the 1st time, turn my back on Nokia. Just i have a new headache now to find perhaps a good alternative phone. I'm not an Apple fan, so my choices are limited. perhaps samsung android. :sigh:
I will miss Nokia, but loyalty needs to be rewarded.

The author must be manic depressed, I felt sick after forcing myself to read the article. My goodness, this is technology we're talking about, not some kind of religion! Certainly there are some shortcomings in this new platform, but look at the progress that's been made since the "no copy and paste" hoo-ha with the first release of Windows Phone. There are 887 000 hits on that Google search, and now the argument is totally invalid. During the next few months there will be dual flash, tethering, SD cards, 100 000+ apps and improvements to the OS. Personally I will also prefer to wait until Windows Phone 8 arrives on a Nokia E-7 like device with every single bit of tech crammed into it, but will rather have a steak on my plate while I wait ;0)

Nashua Mobile has the Lumia 800 on MTN for R449/month on AnyTime 350 and R349/month on AnyTime 200. Both include 75Mb of data for the first 3 months

Cell C will offer it on their R680 business contract with 400 minutes and 250Mb data included, and Virgin Mobile also have it from beginning of April
