So now that it's official, what do you think about the Nokia Microsoft partnership? Windows Phone as Nokia's primary Smartphone platform.

Some of the highlights announced:

  • Nokia's "applications and content store" (Ovi) will be integrated into Microsoft Marketplace
  • Nokia Maps will be at the heart of Microsoft's Bing and AdCenter
  • Microsoft will provide developer tools to Nokia (So no Qt?)
  • Symbian is now described as a "franchise platform" with Nokia planning to sell 150 million Symbian devices into the future
  • MeeGo emphasis will be on longer-term exploration with plans to ship "a MeeGo-related product" later this year (not products)

Windows Phone 7 running on a Nokia? Now that's a thought I would never have entertained until today.

My condolences to Rouxenator and Piesang.

I think that the Nokia N95 I currently have will be the last Nokia phone I own. Too bad, I really liked Nokia.

Thank goodness they are slashing symbian to a "franchise platform".

It was horrific compared to Android, WP7 and ios.

Great decision!

I just hope Meego doesn't flop because of this. Symbian can die for all I care but Meego could be awesome.

The Nokia+MS partnership was expected after the "burning platform" memo leaked, but I still maintain that Nokia+Android would have been the better option. The Nokia+MS partnership should however produce excellent devices with Nokia knack for good hardware and MS strengths in software. Both partners needed one another so it must be a match made in heaven for them. Wonder how long it will be before Nokia is swallowed up completely by MS? The Nokia name will always be there but in name only.

I, for one, would strongly consider the E7 with WP7 on it if it were to become available.

Still think Android would have been a much better chioce. I would buy an N8 running android, the hardware is great especially the camera, but symbiam 3 sucks the big one

this two always join current trends very late, they like playing catch up,even though they produce great products, they are both not good strategists...nokia chose a wrong partner

Still can't believe Nokia is now basically just a phone manufacturer and a Microsoft partner. :(

Yeah... but Nokia had to ACT quickly... They waited too long, IMHO.

I read in another discussion forum from a guy that worked at Nokia and how screwed-up the Fins really are.

-he said they only work 9 to 5.
- took almost 2 to 3 months to approve change management
- there's more than a 1000 people working on Symbian!! :wtf:

I think that's more devs than the whole team that worked on Windows 7.

Just very very bad management at Nokia and an unwillingness to square up to market changes and act upon it.

1000 devs working on Symbian!!?? Lol, that's shocking considering how buggy and unfinished it feels on the N8, Nokia have a lot of dead weight.

I kid you not.

I'm still wondering what they actually do at Nokia every day.

The US president of Nokia is already being replaced by a Microsoft employee. A lot of Nokia employees will lose their jobs in Finland. Really some tough times ahead for the Fins. Nokia is a big employer in Finland so all this will have an effect on that nation. For a Finland icon like Nokia to become more American is a national disaster of sorts.
