Nokia has just released the Nokia 5800 (touch screen model) with much fanfare. They must have spent megabucks sponsoring radio shows such as the Take40. I'm interested in the phone but nobody in Cape Town has a 'live demo' to trial. Surely this is a priority for the company... before commiting hundreds of Rands every month, I want to know that I like the phone. This appears too much to ask.

Called up the Nokia helpline (shocking quality... had to repeat everything twice!!!) only to get given the number of a franchise shop in the area. Number just rings. Have now tried two big Vodashops and Cellucity... no luck.

This is pathetic... Nokia should ensure that if they are releasing a high-tech phone, consumers at least have the option of playing with it before signing on the bottom line.

Can anybody offer some advice here?

Thanks!

This is the best advice. Sign the contract, use the phone to it's fullest potential and if you are not happy return it within 7 days of signing the contract. Then take something else.

view videos of it on youtube, and watch in in action.

read reviews. lots of reviews.

Piesang, thanks for your advice. Can one get the contract reversed (and everything refunded) if you don't like the phone or do you need to then pick another model. I really don't NEED another phone... I just like the 5800 specifically.

But, truth be told, wouldn't it be easier for EVERYBODY if Nokia could supply a few live demo models to a few outlets in each city? I don't think I'm being unreasonable here.

Keeper, thanks, I like the unit a lot but am concerned about the sensitivity of the touch screen... I've read mixed reviews. Need to check it out myself.

but they just released it?? give them a few days, i'm sure they should...

I have the same issue, not just with nokia though. None of the manufactuers have a working version of the phone which you can demo. I have been to vodaworld and checked out a few stores in the malls - all they got are those dummy units on their displays.

Peisang, are you sure you can take the phone back and swap it for another brand before 7 days are up?

To the best of my knowledge, it was released over a month ago.

I'm just a little fed up that nobody can make a plan...

I agree - it feels as though the retailers are a bit worried about stock levels..

I, for one, would like to know what the stock levels look like.

Average waiting time aswell....

from my experience the screen is quite sensitive, its not a capacative screen, but you require only the littlest bit of pressure, almost the same as on the iPhone, i initially pressed hard thinking it would require a serious nudge, but i soon realised it needs just a little pressure, i have to say, its much more responsive than the touch diamond, especially with sweeping or swiping gestures but even a normal press is easy compared to the diamond.
