Hello,

I have recently lost the ability to make an EDGE connection on my Nokia N73 cell phone which is on an MTN contract.

Two things have happened which may be the cause, or just coincidence:

Updated firmware to V 4.0735.3.0.2; 01-09-2007; RM133
Changed a faulty SIM card for a new one

The phone can make a GPRS or 3G connection. In Network settings have set to Dual mode, and tried GSM only as well. Also tried phone in different parts of Joburg.

Any ideas why I can't make an EDGE connection?

Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I will delete all the network settings and download them OTA again. I always was able to connect via EDGE (when and where available). Dont know whats changed.

Rgds

to be honest! Network settings don't depend if you get EDGE or 3G or HSDPA. You can have a phone with no setting and it should show EDGE,3G,HSDPA its very strange cause with MTN my nokia n73 no matter where I go I get EDGE and 3G so maybe its the phone itself?

OK. Solved this one. [Edit: Not solved, keep reading thread]

It had nothing to do with the settings as such, since the first thing I tried was deleting all the existing access points and downloading new ones. No difference.

Then I called my service provider who suggested I call MTN Corporate Help Desk (083 1 555). I was greeted by a very knowledgeable, professional chap. He asked me to change my network mode from Dual to GSM (Tools -> Settings -> Network). The phone restarted. Then said to switch back from Dual to GSM. Phone restarted. He said to wait 10 mins while he also "reset my number on the network". I noticed my phone no longer showed which network I was connected (Usually says MTN). I then turned my phone on and off, and EDGE now works, and the phone displays "MTN" as well.

Hope this helps others. Maybe it was the new SIM card I had in the phone (the old one was damaged) that stopped EDGE working or the Firmware update, who knows.

I know 1555 data help desk. They know their stuff dont even bother with 173 or 808 if you have a data related query!

Update

For some reason, Edge disappeared again. I called 083 1555 again and asked for the same chap who helped me last time. He very patiently and professionally helped me check my data settings [Had to change Packet Conn to internet, and delete access point, and reinstall access point, he also reset my connection on the network]. Edge seems to be working again, will keep an eye on it. But bravo MTN for the excellent staff members on the 083 1555 help desk.

Edge has disappeared again. Seems whenever MTN does something on the network then it solves my problem, but then the ability to connect to Edge disappears again by itself with no changes being made on my phone. Strange. WIll call 083 1555 again see whats going on.

Hi
I dont think your issue has anything to do with the settings. Its a handset issue. changing between the two public access points myMTN and internet does not make a difference in the EDGE connection, both APNs are exactly the same. I suggest that you test your SIM in another EDGE enabled handset and monitor. Let me know of your findings. You can PM me.

Hopefully solved this one [Not Solved, see next post] . I tried my sim in an identical phone (N73, same firmware version), and that phone worked with EDGE. I tried the other sim in my N73 and no EDGE, so definitely something to do with the handset.

So I thought I would reload the firmware, and before doing that (backed up phone!)I used the option (Tools/Settings/Phone/Orig Phone Settings). After this EDGE worked perfectly and is still working right now. So something peculiar was going on possibly with the software, who knows.

So this is solved for the time being. Thanks everyone for your inputs. If things change will re-post.

OK, the problem re-occurred.

What I had been doing was completing backing up my phone using the Nokia PC Suite, then re-installing the firmware, then restoring _everything_ back to the phone (including user settings that were on the memory card). The problem came back.

Next I tried reinstalling the firmware, but only restoring my contacts and calendar, then reinstalling my applications from scratch. For about a week the phone has behaved itself.

Maybe there was something curious going on with the user settings causing the phone to lose its EDGE connection, and everytime I did a backup, reinstall, restore, I was restoring whatever was causing the problem.

By restoring the original phone settings as in the previous post things worked for a while.

Anyway, will keep an eye on the phone for a month, and if the problem comes back will re-post.
