Hi guys

Im new to this wireless internet thing, always had adsl. I want to know if i can use my nokia n8 as a modem to connect to interwebs with 8ta data bundle to give me good speeds. The phone supports hSPDA 10MBS. Anybody have any experience in this or should i just invest in a 3g modem. According to the map im covered for 3g signal.

Thanks

Get a modem.

Use your phone.

Is that what you are looking for?

The choice is yours. Use a modem and have a phone all day, every day. Or use your phone as a modem.

Yes im looking to use my phone as a modem to connect via a usb cable to pc, I dont need to have internet 24/7- also have 2 phones so its not a problem. What im concerned is bout the speeds. Will 7.2mbps 3g modem be faster than my phone?

No and no again.

Theoretically you wouldn't even get close to 5mbps never mind 7.2 or 10. I haven't seen an 8ta Speed test faster than 4mbps, so I highly doubt it.

ok cool, so the spec on the phone wont be a bottleneck for the speeds. Whilst using vodacom im averaging around 200kbps on downloads, if i get anywhere near those speeds ill be excited. Ill just have to buy a sim and test for myself. Thanks for your help.

Buy yourself a CellC sim too and prepare to be amazed. I get full 3.6mbps on my Nokia 5800 and close to 7.2mbps in peak hours on my CellC ZTE Modem.

Huh what?

You could be right, while speed test have shown higher. The speeds should average out, it will probably do those speeds for a short period of time, burst mode.

What's the use of having 42Mbps speed and a 3Gb cap?

I don't have 42Mbps, I have 7.2 and a 2Gb data bundle and it's more than enough for R1499 including. It has served me well.

Yep, that was a great deal and a game-changer! Now we need to see who will follow the 8ta i5 promo (10Gb @ R199/m). I somehow doubt if VC/MTN will blink - at least for another 6 months or so...

I am using an 8ta sim in my SGS without problem. Can use usb cable to tether, or create a wireless hotspot. Should work fine with an N8.
