Nokia N8 Belle Update

V3?

Mm.. like I said above.. having problem with Skype and OVI store..

And you?

Yep I went over to Official for a while, but it was too sluggish in comparison (theme effects causing extra loading time etc.) to what I was used to. Back to V3, did a totally fresh install, mem card and all, no problems so far.

I don't use skype on my phone but as the other dude above said there's a new version out, ..never had a problem with Nokia Store..

Navifirm Plus which I downloaded, you have a choice of 3 indexes you can use,
1. Nokia Care Suite (so same server the nokia suite uses, except you can then flash it to any compatible phone)
2. Quality Assurance (I am taking a guess, this server is where Nokia release firmware versions to be tested by the cellphone networks like MTN, Vodacom ect who then approve the firmware to be released to their phones)
3. Production External (no clue)

I grabbed mine from the 1st server, and it is the same version that was officially released.

Now if you use the Phoenix software, great thing about it, it can even flash phones that you bricked with a bad update, no idea how that works, but I assume it talks directly to the hardware.

So step1:
Go into Phoenix, figure out your product code (its actually different number in NaviFirm that what you get from *#0000#)

step2:
Go into Navifirm, -> Nokia Care Suite Server
Choose Nokia N8 (RM-596)
Then next column choose software version, for Belle it is 111.30.609
Then in Variants column choose what you need, mine was "euro3_dg (0599766)
Then on the files side, click "Mark All" but then untick the 1.22gb emmc file, which is just gonna format your internal memory drive and wipe your photos ect. and its 1.2gb you dont have to download.

Step3:
Close phoenix
Place the files into the the product folder. Eg. on my pc it was:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Phoenix\Products
Inside that folder create a folder called RM-596
Then place the downloaded file into this RM-596 folder.

step4:
open up phoenix
Detect your phone
Make sure phone is fully charged just in case you brick it
Flash firmware
Software will tell you what to do, even if something goes wrong.

ps. A tip. When you installed Phoenix, make sure you dont run a antivirus/firewall ect which can stuff up the installed, because it is cracked software.

Navifirm that I used: http://www.restricted.co.za/upload/navifirmplus_1.7.zip
The Phoenix guide I used: (only the navifirm and phoenix part, I skipped the modding part with cooker ect) http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.php?topic=41316.0

Basically everything on my phone works, with the exception it was missing my South African MAPs ect which I just downloaded again.

I did it and it worked perfectly. You, Kind Sir, are a Gentleman and a Scholar.

I see.. yeah.. a friend of mine was using Belle.. official one.. didn't really like it.. and also.. the apps.. can't use the ones I have.. sigh :P

I really like Belle, but now 2 days in a row I find my battery not lasting nearly as long as it used to, and the only apps I always leave open is WhatsApp.

Before the end of the day, usually when its time for supper the phone asks to go into battery power saving mode which I do, and then it at least lasts up to bed time at which time it needs a recharge.

In the past I could easily get up to 3 days with regular use out of it :(

You think? I've found this phone on Anne to be pretty good, I easily got up to 3 days battery life out of my N8 without any problems.

Make sure u have GSM selected, a dark theme (AMOLED lights up individual pixels), wifi off, email auto-checks to 15min-30min-1hr, turn screen brightness down, etc. more info can be found on the web.
I leave whatsapp on all the time..

Ye latest Social uses push pull, so is much easier on the battery.. Tried it out, works well, but I stick to whatsapp..

Indeed, the social app ect was the first thing I turned off. Most of the time I dont need to use facebook on my phone, I sit behind a pc most of the day at work with FB access.

I do have a pretty dark theme on, its called TransBelle, however it isn't completely dark, its got a grid-like pattern for a background. Only 4 icons on the homescreen, none of those auto updating crap. Though I will admit, I like my brightness :(

Ya social isn't for me, also at a pc mostly.

Try living with 25% brightness, should leave you with adequate contrast in sunny conditions. I use 0% because I have black backgrounds and Clearblack theme by AttisX.. I'm mad about battery conservation! :D

Oh also turn theme effects off, ..although I have them on, but I've customised them by choosing the best looking individual components that don't slow anything down and still look elegant.

can someone please help me. i have a n8 and want to install the belle update. what is the best version out and how do i install it? all help would be highly appreciated

First place (IMO) would be to wait for it to become available for you via the Nokia Suite. Alternatively, you could try the procedure explained in post #111 by Tinuva. I did that, using firmware for product code 0599399 and it works awesomely. Just make a backup of your contacts, messages and whatnot before trying it, since you WILL lose all of it. Applications shouldn't be affected, since they are stored on the Mass Memory drive of the N8, which should remain untouched.

I see that this software has been (mostly) made available now - it should be possible to upgrade most phones via Nokia Suite.

Yeah, it was available from the 29th. Updated without any issues. So far pretty happy with the new look and feel. Though I think the standard themes are still pretty dull. I prefer the Dark Illusion theme from the store. Adds enormously to the aesthetic appeal of the UI.
