A unibody anodized aluminum chassis and a reinforced glass over the panel make the Nokia N8 certainly look like one of the sturdiest smartphones around. And the Finnish company is keen to show just how resistant to the elements it really is.

The Nokia Conversations blog has just published a video demonstrating the drop test that the N8 prototype is subjected to before entering mass production. They have also listed some of the other endurance trials the N8 had to pass.

Those include exposure to extreme temperatures (from around -40°C to +85°C) and humidity over 95%. The N8 was also tested in some real life scenarios like simulation of carrying the phone in your pockets plus a buttons durability check, where buttons are tested to last over 1 million clicks.

Still neither Nokia nor we would suggest you try any of these at home, unless you want your warranty voided.

As said in another thread ... Nokia is a great phone to kick around at home/office/mall/etc (as these Coldsteel-like videos try to prove). Can that unibody anodized aluminum chassis hold a good edge? LOL!
 
Not only that, its a great phone for taking pictures with, connecting to HD displays, navigate for free (in your native language) and just generally be free to do with what you please. No lock-ins to vendor online stores or lack of file transfer functionality.
 
Wow, nokia are so behind they just launched hd output where competitors have wireless DLNA... Navigate for free? Almost every phone released in the last 2 years can do that...
 
How many phones have Dolby digital surround and HD 720p output using DNLA? What about HDMI for connecting it to my PC monitor? I am not sure that "Almost every phone released in the last 2" has got free maps with navigation - not in Afrikaans either.
 
When I need a device to drive in nails I get a hammer. Soon we'll see a video of a Nokia with a built-in saw ... important features when the OS is acient and the manufacturer is so hardware focussed. Soon the local hardware store will sell Nokia multitools.
 
:D You guys make my LOL a lot. But its true, Symbian is very old, still its cool to see how it totally wastes the new kids on the block with its brutal unlocked power and flexibility.

If this is anything to go by on what MeeGo will do.... I see a N990 JackHamer on the horizon :p

Yep, I am planning on getting one at the end of the month. It seems to be a logical follow-up on the N82 I had previously.

I'm thinking of getting this as an upgrade to my Nokia N82 which I have at the moment as I am due for an upgrade but probably going to switch to Vodacom if I can because they much cheaper than Autopage for the N8...

I was not aware that Samsung provides free lifetime navigation on their handsets...

I have one for about two weeks now and even I'll admit that the OS is not as slick as iOS or Android. The response time is quite noticeable. Hopefully Meego will change this.
 
Whats a few milliseconds if you have the best camera, best GPS, best data connectivity and a really strong phone?
Anyways, there will still be a lot of fixes for Symbian^3 now that they have 4 devices running it.
Just look at the 5800, a few months ago it went to V51.0 and it is much better than when it came out.

Lol, you must have loved the N95 then... With it's 5mp camera that took about 20 seconds to launch and about 5s lag to take a shot...

Nah, got a N82 with real Xenon flash. Much improved over the N95, 18 seconds to launch and 3s lag to take a shot :p

Nah trust me mate, it's quite noticeable and not as small as a few milliseconds.

It takes about 1.5s to change the orientation from portrait to landscape. Also when changing to another home screen, it doesn't happen in real-time (i.e you can't see part of the next screen as you swipe) and there's a slight delay. I also had my first freeze on Saturday, when it restarted on its own.

I guess I'm nitpicking because I absolutely love it, more so than an iPhone or Galaxy S which I've used quite a bit as well. I guess what I'm trying to say is that everyone is not completely wrong when they criticise the OS. But in terms of value and what you get with the phone, the N8 is ahead for me.
