Nokia N95 8GB NAV

With everyone making such a big noise about the Garmin nav working on N95, whats wrong with the 1 on this phone? It has 2 years free voice nav, the maps are the same as what you get with BMW, (NAVTEQ), although it does not have the speedtrap alert like the Garmin does. Where can I buy just the Garmin s/w, and is it worth it since the Nokia 1 is free?

And how can I update the maps on the Nokia?
 
Is it free on the 8Gb? I had to pay around 100euro to enable it on the N95-1.

Anyway, the Garmin product is just a little bit more polished, but there are really no big differences. So, if you have the Maps with nav for free, no reason to go out and buy Garmin Mobile XT.

That's very cool. In that case, I really don't think that it's worth going for Garmin Mobile XT - unless you go for the torrent version, just to check it out and decide whether you want to buy it or not.

My impressions of GPS on a cellphone can be summed up in one sentence: not quite ready to replace a proper GPS unit. It works, yes, and it is GREAT when you are lost, but there are just too many compromises to use it on a daily basis. Some of the compromises are:

*Lack of touchscreen, which means that entering data while driving is very dangerous
*Lack of mounting facilities - you have to buy a cradle
*Battery drain - you have to use the car charger and this ruins your battery due to trickle charging
*Questionable accuracy of the unit, and oversensitivity to the environment (tall buildings, overcast, etc)
 
the n95's easymap stuff is really rubish at routing, the garmin one works so much better
 
Well, the N95 8GB uses Nokia Maps, provided by NavteQ, which is the same system used in the BMW's, Land Rover's etc. I find that it worx great, when I use the Garmin XT it keeps disconnecting off the bluetooth carkit, but the standard nav stays on all the time.

Is there any way to add POI's like speedcams and stuff to the standard nav?
 
nope, cant do poi's and that stuff, well not on the std nokia 95.
 
Free Maps on N95- maybe

Ok...

So although the maps are "free" on the N95 (Nokia Maps) you do have to pay for voice commands to tell you where to go. Think you also have to pay for some other stuff (getting my N95-8Gb tomorrow :D).

Go to maps.nokia.com to download more maps and for all the info...
 
Well from what I understand you don't have to pay for the voice nav on the N95-8Gb - a most welcome addition I must say.

I hope they do this with the N82 as well.

As for someone commenting on the routing of Maps vs Garmin Mobile XT, I've yet to see the difference in the routing - they've both picked exaclty the same route for the destinations I've tried.
 
Well, I tested both yesterday, going from a client in Randfontein to another in Lenasia, the Nokia Maps took me on the correct route, the Garmin mapped out a route through some farm roads, one of which was closed! Both were set to shortest route, so there.

You can insert POI's into the Nokia system, haven't figured out how to get it to warn, although I have the database of 1100+ speed cameras from http://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/ worx great.

And the voice guidance is free for 2 years on the 8GB.

are you saying that the speed camera POI works on the Nokia navigation program
 
It shows the camera as a point of interest, but I have not figured out how to add sound to it as a warning, although I got the sound files (wav) but cant seem to add it to the group.

Thanks , what format POI does it use , and last question , can you set the distance to possibly warn u in advance of the POI
 
dunno about the warnings, haven't figured it out yet. The file format is lmx, and then you use Nokia Maps to import it.
 
Hi Guys & Ladies,

I've been looking for 'speed trap/camera' warnings for N95 8GB GPS (Nokia Maps) for ages and was VERY excitied to find this thread ONLY to find that the download cannot be opened by my phone. There are THREE downloads namely TOLLGATES, HAZARD AREAS & CAMERA HAZARDS.

I downloaded all three and ONLY the 2nd one 'HAZARD AREAS' can be opened and saved on my phone. Did any of you experience the same problem?

I REALLY want to be able to use the 'CAMERA HAZARD' file...please help if you can!!

You must be referring to the Garmap road safety data available here

These are ".gpx" files that work with Garmin products, so im not sure they will work with Nokia Maps. Maybe try and get Garmin Mobile XT and try again.
