Nokia N95 GPS

Hi,
I also had an issue the first time i used Maps.
What Nokia doesnt tell you is that your phone doesnt actually come WITH Nokia maps.
You need to DOWNLOAD it from here first: http://maps.nokia.com
Once you have downloaded the software onto your PC, you need to connect your phone to your pc in DATA TRANSFER mode.
Once connected, RUN the Nokia maps software on your PC and then follow the instructions to set it up, choose the maps you want and then choose the voice you want (will only work when you pay though).
It will then Download the maps and voice to your phone and when tell you when its done.
You can now disconnect your N95 from your PC and are now ready to try it out.
My N95 took a long time +- 10mins to connect to the satelites for the first time (i left it by a window and had a cup of coffee) but once it had locked on to the satelites for the first time, it now locks onto them quite quickly (1min - 3mins) depending on the weather. It even locked on during a very rainy day so it does work!
Nokia maps is quite good and i use it to show me maps while im traveling but if you want Voice, try www.nav4all.com - i use it for navigation and it works like a dream and its FREE!!!

I took my N95 out the box, went straight to Maps and it worked, no need to install anything.
Keep in mind that the GPS received is situated under the keypad, so slide the phone open, and let it just sit on your palm, and it should work ... also, it takes quite a while to get a GPS fix, that is normal

I concur both mine worked fine from the box straight. Upgraded both to V12 firmware afterward for the assisted GPS functionality.

I guess it depends where you bought it because mine had no maps on it ?
But once i downloaded them it worked perfectly.

The maps are supposed to be pre-loaded on the the memory card.
The first thing you must do when you get your N95 is to check if you have the latest firmware (V12).
If not, upgrade it before doing anything else. This will install all the maps as well.

Thanks me hearties. It worked! I upgraded my firmware and voila.. =O)
However, I now have a new problem. I cannot get Map Loader to work. When I try to connect the phone to my laptop in data transfer mode - it fails to install/find the driver. I have installed the latest driver and pc suite versions from nokia and it still doesn't work. What is even more confusing is - the connection works in pc suite mode and I can transfer files, etc... But Map Loader doesn't detect the phone on that mode. Oh I'm so very lost.. Can anyone help?

I think Map Loader will work on "Mass Storage" mode.
1. Run the GPS software (maps) with the memory card inside. Exit the program.
2. Download and Install maploader.
3. Connect your handset via USB and select "Mass Storage" on the N95.
4. Launch maploader and follow the instructions.
If that doesn't work try inserting your MicroSD card into a memory card reader on your PC instead @ step 3.
The GPS software is physically on your phone memory and can't be transferred over to the memory card. This occupies very little space anyway. However actual maps that take a lot of space can be saved to your memory card. This is done automatically through maploader. I hope this clears it up.

Thanks for the prompt reply dlk001. I'm stuck at step 3, every time I try to connect on "Mass Storage" mode my laptop looks for an N95 driver and fails. Unfortunately I don't have a memory card reader.
My phone connects with my laptop in every data transfer mode, except Mass Storage. I'm running Vista, perhaps that has something to do with it..

On vista, you may have to right-click maps and choose "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR".

I know this is like 2 days late, but my lapto also has that little problem on certain USB ports, just play around with them (xp home)
