Nokia N95 - Tips/Tricks/Apps etc

Hey guys,

Firstly I was sitting wondering how many users on here have N95s? Let's not turn this into a flame war or thread for fanboys of other phones to come out the woodwork please... but as a place for N95 users to swop idea, favourite apps etc.

That leads to my main point of this thread. What are the apps you have on your N95 that you feel are real must haves? Something that did not come standard with the N95 but you have loaded and now can't live without?

My personal favourites :

RotateMe - app that allows you to change the screen orientation from landscape to portrait merely by turning the handset

DivX Player - allows you to watch avi, xvids etc on your N95

Advanced Phone Lock - allows you to set password access to apps you choose eg gallery, messaging etc. No more prying eyes.

Garmin Mobile XT - much better than Nokia maps, loving it!

I've got a few more but these are the top at the moment for me....

Anyone else out there?

Quick question : What contract did you get your N95 on? According to the last flyer I saw it was going for nearly 10k prepaid. That, is madness.

Handy Taskman Task manager, allows you to see what programmes are running and to switch between them and kill them. Also shows memory and Ram usage.

I will also definatly recommend Garmin Mobile Xt

Free with the contract? Is this the same slidey phone with the 8GB internal memory?

Yes it is free on the contract, I got the original version not the 8gig one. Was a good deal, the exact same price as N73 music edition when I got it.

I thought you must be talking about the 8Gb one for R10,000! Probably find most of us have the original N95 without the 8Gb. Not sure I see the justification for getting the new one. I prefer being able to slot in memory card - 8Gb one does not have a slot! Only benefit is the slightly bigger screen really....

I see. Ok :p That makes sense then. I like the fact that the 8GB one has, well 8GBs but R10 000 for a phone, no matter how cool it is, or what it does, is madness.

Where is the best place to download there apps?

I got rotateme, but the phone keeps telling me its not signed and it wont install?

You need to sign those apps yourself. Here is a good tutorial on how to do this...
http://www.nokiasoftware.net/symbian-applications-os-9-1/1628-how-sign-s60v3-unsigned-apps.html

I used to do it that way but I have now discovered SignSIS and I use this. It is a program that goes through the same process but it does most of the steps automatically. This shows you how to get it and how to use it....

The process can be a little complicated at first but once you get the hand of it it is actually fairly simple.

As for where to find stuff, I hve a number of places... all found in my travel around the net, but try this for starters :

Yesterday I wanted to download the mobile DivX player and had problems with registration on their site. So I googled for an alternative player and bumped into the Coreplayer. This IMO is by far one of the best players available around for the N95. There is no need to convert movies to mpeg-4 as it caters for most types like AVI, MOV, DivX, XviD, WMV and others. It even played a 700mb movie with no problems at all. I loved it!

- Fring - MSN, Skype, Google Talk chat and VOIP client for N95. That is VOIP via MSN, Skype or Google Talk, which is great.

- GooSync - sync your nokia calendar with your online goole calendar, and with the right software, with your desktop calendar as well.

- Frozen Bubble - classic puzzle game for Nokia. Looks great on N95

- Lightsabre to showoff :) - http://www.symbian-freeware.com/download-lightsaber-for-nokia-n95.html

iGoogle, Google Reader (RSS), Gmail, and Google Calendar all work great on the default nokia browser and I rather use the browser that standalone RSS reader and Gmail client

For sites, I like to use http://www.symbian-freeware.com/ and http://noknok.tv/

I just love the N95 and prefer the symbian platform just because you can get some great software without any hassle.

Nic, I have been thinking about VOIP but have not looked into it very much. A couple of questions come to mind -

*How do you find it to use in terms of call quality?
*Do you end up using VOIP instead of making normal calls or do you just use it to phone friends in foreign countries etc?
*Does anyone know what say 1 minute of conversation equals in terms of MBs and hence cost
*Do you need 3G to make calls or will it work outside 3G areas?

My brother is getting transferred to Australia soon and it will be a lot cheaper to chat on Skype and that will be a lot more convenient if I can call from my cell instead of my PC...

LancelotSA, I have been meaning to test for a long time but never got around to testing it. I tried once calling my sister on Skype via 3G and she could here me but I couldn't hear her, which I think it was her microphone settings rather not the application not working.

So the best I think its just to give it a try yourself :) I was going to use it in my flat since I have wireless and the N95 has wireless as well so I get an instant wireless Skype phone from my N95.

Really good one for me is Fring (www.fring.com). Signs you into your Skype account, MSN and even allows you to set up your own SIP account settings for seamless VOIP (have done this with a voipbuster account in Canada, Vodacom lost out on a fortune in roaming charges for 2 and a half months!).

Mail for exchange (can pull it off the Download! catalogue) brilliant for syncing with my corporate exchange server.

Another business app although pretty expensive is Bizreader - Inbuilt OCR technology to read business cards via the camera and save to contacts - Not always right but you can review and correct before saving to contacts.

Google's Gmail J2ME app is really slick (mail.google.com/app)

Google's Google maps is also really nice however pretty data intensive.

Another one of my favs is Nokia's Sports Tracker - allows you to create GPS routes (nice for holidays, you track your route and then review it on Google Earth!)

Love this phone to bits!
