It seems the issue with the GPS is that the antenna is not shielded properly and it picks up interference from the phones inner workings. Shielding the antenna gives around 4dB gain in signal thereby significantly enhancing the GPS.
Apparently Nokia have a mod for screen and GPS issues ... they replace the whole back of the unit. The new back has a noticibly thicker piece under the antenna (the shield) and the camera slider now has a gap between the glass and the cover.
