Nokia N97 GPS Problems

I got my dad a N97 about a month ago or so. Initial firmware was v10. GPS lock on took a few mintues but worked relatively ok. I then flashed the firmware to v12, and since then I haven't ever been able to get a GPS lock on.

I haven't yet flashed to v20, which I hope can cure the problem, because my dad would actually find it quite useful to have.

All in all, I'm less than impressed with the N97. It has a beautiful screen, build quality is good, but the software seems to be lacking to me. Somehow the phone just doesn't feel special to me, as befits a top of the line phone.

Has anyone in Cape Town found somewhere that actually knows about the GPS/Lens problem? Both Vodacom shops in Somerset Mall know nothing about the problem, and insist it is going to cost me money to have the back assembly replaced. Having the contract with MTN doesn't help either...

Apparently u can. I'm going to on the weekend. Well atleast they said i can bring it in and they will do it free of charge.

Is the "they" you refer to Nokia SA or one of the SP's (Vodacom/MTN)?

I contacted Vodacom's customer care service and they knew nothing of this. They suggested I contact Nokia SA to find out, but all I got from them in return was an automated and very generic "..here is how our after sales care works..." reply via e-mail.

If anyone has any additional info on this, please post here. Thanks.

At last....got my lens and Gps back section replaced!! :)

I went to the Nokia care repair centre in Chartwell Drive Umhlanga Rocks (Cel fix). What a pleasure these guys were, I walk in they smile, I tell them about my scratched lens and GPS problem and they acknowledge that Nokia has advised replacement under warrantee. So I ask the guy if he has the part, he says he does and its the new one....AND HE REPLACES IT IN LESS THAN 30MINS AT NO COST! Big up to you guys at CelFix!!!

In contrast, just an hour earlier, I went to Nokia Care Centre in the Gateway. They have never heard of the problem and Nokia does not have new parts cos the phone is too new!!! Also they might get parts in 2 weeks......this is the same message ive been getting from them for at least the last 2 months.

OK.....the end result of all this. I still think I have had the older backplate installed.....I don't see any visible screening on the GPS antennae and the camera has the same Blue plastic cover slide. Having said that, its a bit more springy clearing the glass face by about 0.5mm but when pressed it makes contact with the glass.

The GPS took 1min to get initial lock after cold start and now gets a lock in 3 to 30 secs and has a below 10m accuracy in the first 30secs. So all in all a good day!!

Hey Leftfoot,

Do you have the phone number for Cel fix? I will be in durban for a short time at the end of this month and would like to get this problem fixed. I can't seem to find any contact details online. Thanks

Btw- anyone who is on vodacom sp and is in cape town- Canal walk vodacare acknowledges the lens scratching problem and will fix it free of charge. My phone is with autopage (vodacom) so they want me to send it to jhb for 6 weeks even though they have never heard of the lens scratching or the gps issue!

Finally got the following reply from Nokia SA regarding this:

Thank you for emailing Nokia Careline.

With regard to your enquiry, thank you for your prompt reply, please kindly be informed that what you have read from Nokia forum is far to the reality on our side. Nokia has neither issue any directive to acknowledge the defects of the issue mentioned, nor a solution for it, as such, our advice at the maintime is to refer any problems to our Authorized Service Centre to check the issue and find a way out.

In the hope of getting your full satisfaction on our assistance, please allow us to take a few seconds of your precious time for your valuable feedback on the below survey link:

Thanks again.
I didn't realize until now that if you type the name of the store in the store locator it spits out the address and phone number. I was viewing the province stores where you only see the company names.

You learn something new everyday!

Same with my 6210 Navigator, one moment it will say 200m then suddenly 1km. Keeps changing the whole time. dont depend on it anymore though. Just use its normal maps without the routing. :)

Hi guys
I experienced the same problem at least 5 mins, had to step outside and not move for it to lock a gps signal but since i Upgraded to new software version 20.019 its lighting fast !! not longer than 20 sec max 30 sec while driving !
