Hi all

In America, the FCC is the place to keep an eye on when you're anticipating the release of a new phone, like I have with the Nokia N97. Once it appears on their website (http://digg.com/u1PPB) it normally takes a month or so before it gets released after which there's a big delay before it hits our shores. Do we have a FCC equivalent that we can monitor for new mobile releases? Or even better - does anyone know when the Nokia N97 will be released in SA?

Thanks,
Justin.

Wish I knew, it is an awesome phone. Will be keeping my eyes peeled on the media though.

They have quite a backlog. The E55, 6170 Navigator, the E71x and some others. Most of the delay is due to local network testing, putting support systems in place and training.

n97 is gonna cost a hell of a lot..... at leat 8GRAND pay in on a Talk 1000!!!

Yeah, it's expensive, but it's a great phone. Just a pitty about the dated Nokia OS, but it still looks pretty sleek.

You could get it without paying a upgrade fee, but it will cost you more per month... On MTN at least.

Yeah but that is the latest crazy "wool over the eyes" stuff that all the networks are doing..... It;s just like buying furniture from one of the furniture shops and putting it on HP with an almost 30% interest rate.... wonderful until you do the maths...

Take the Xperia... whether you pay in 5grand of pay R250 more a month on your Business Talk package you are still paying in.............. It's just "hidden" into the monthly fee!

No sure, there's no doubt you're going be paying way more than you would when you buy cash, but it's an option. Considering that I'm going to use it as a video camera, a gps, a phone, a music player etc, and don't need to purchase seperate devices, I think it's worth it. Skype comes pre-installed (if our network operators will allow it) and also, with the new Nokia App store opening soon, there will be tons of applications available, like there are for the iPhone.

Ive been waiting anxiously for the N97 to be released. They first said first quarter 2009, then it moved to the 26th of June I think....

My MTN contract is up in May, and I was hoping that it would be released before then. It obviously will not be....but I still have my trusty N95, so I am not keen on anything else!

Any idea's if I am allowed to postpone my contract renewal, until the N97 is released?

Your contract should just carry on, but once that date has come, you have the option to upgrade. I'm also due in June, but will wait for the N97. I've been stuck with the biggest piece of rubbish ever concieved by a cellphone company for two years now and when I get my N97, I'm going to use it to video the destruction of my Samsung i600 Blackjack.

Once your 24 months are up, if you don't re-sign and upgrade then the contract becomes month-2-month. You can carry on like this forever if you like, or until the phone you want becomes available, at which point you simply re-sign and start a new 24 month contract. Waiting is always the best option!

Also - I see the N97 hasn't even been released overseas yet. I would say that your best estimate would be end 2009 or early 2010 for local release I am afraid!

Its allready hit the FCC in the US so they are ready to ship, it won't be that long. But I'll be waiting nonetheless.
