Hi guys,

My mom’s birthday is coming soon and I want to get her a Cherry MX Brown based mechanical keyboard.

Which one to buy without breaking the bank?

Hahahaha! Nice! If I had to buy a mech KB for my mom she would say, "WTF is this?! I don't want you as a sun anymore!". My dad however... He'll love it for his gaming! Why would you buy your mom a mech KB for her birthday?

I currently use the CM Quickfire Pro with Black switches (the ones that don't click). http://www.rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=6168

The switches come in Black, Blue, Brown, and I can't remember the rest. Has some backlit modes, which can be turned off altogether. Very hard to find non-gaming orientated Mech keyboards. But some of them have that nice industrialized looks.

I would rather get the XT if I was you, the WASD or Ducky would be MUCH more expensive, and you would have to wait. Also why get the browns? The Blackwidow uses blues if I'm not mistaken ( but blues are loud).

Your mother?? Dude... are you sure that's what she wants? I remember once my mum's husband got her a router for her birthday. She appreciated it in a bemused sort of 'my husband's socially inept but I love him anyway' way.

It sounds stupid, but it is something she can use everyday. Much more personal than a plain old gift card.

Don't wanna be stereotypical or anything but maybe get her that new blender she's had her eye on or maybe even get her a new laptop. Honestly a keyboard is great gift for your brother or your mate but your mother deserves lil more.

I would suggest the Cooler Master Quickfire XT, no frills, solid quality.

It's still not cheap, but you won't get much cheaper mechs.

A second vouch for the XT. Its exactly like the Quickfire Pro internally and doesn't have the half-backlighting or the crummy mini USB cable or the strange CM Storm Window keys. Brown and Blue switches are best for regular use and typing and if your mom is a touch typist the clicks get much softer because she won't be bottoming out the keys.

The key caps are laser engraved but they'll last longer than painted keys.
