I have a Hisense C30 Rock, running android 7

It's still going strong and does all i need from a phone. Send a whatsapp, make a call.
But now it seems one is forced to buy a new phone to replace a perfectly working phone just because the manufacturer don't bring out new Android versions for older phones.

All my apps working, except checkers 60/60 because that got a min of android 8.
Sent mail to Hisense but really not holding my breath for them to even respond.

We have same problem with my wife's P10 plus, she bought on contract recently for cheap price , because MTN was getting rid of the old stock.

So far checkers app the only app that does not want to work. I have a feeling Discovery insure app will soon stop working as well.
Not a train smash for now, but just looking forward, how can one load SAFE custom rom to update Android?

Can one trust places like XDA for example??
Any other trsuted places where one can get custom ROMS to update phones? Check for the C30 and nothing on XDA for that, so trusted alternatives would be nice.

well for future, iPhone has much longer support and Samsung has promised 5 years of updates for quite a few devices

The P10 you'll probably be able to do:

Not sure about the C30.

Not sure what the deal is these days with banking apps and custom roms so just check that out first. As for trust - when I did it I picked a popular rom and spent some time going through the forum threads on xda etc. In the end it's 3rd party software you're installing so there's always going to be some small degree of risk.

same boat as me, and what got me into Rooting every single Android Phone I ever owned, from my Ancient Galaxy Pocket s5300
If you brave, you can try your luck with the "one click Rooting" like Kingo and al the other weird Chinese apps that install who knows what on your phone,

but in future, check XDA before you buy a phone, see what sort of Community and ROMS available for it,
buy Used like myself with my Cracked Screen s9, but with plenty of support. and updates almost on a weekly basis.

Magisk Hide function, so Apps stop acting weird, and stop picking up its a rooted phone,
plenty of tutorials on XDA on how to do it.

the problem is, when i look for phone, first thing i look at is rugged phone. As someone who enjoys my fishing, i need IP68 rugged phone. About 1 month ago, completely drenched by freak wave, phone in pocket wet, and survived.

For the kids as well. Bought them the Cubot Quest rugged phone 2 years ago. Kids and phones are just not a good combination. daughter was thrown in the pool with her phone in the pocket. It survived.

But i go in with mindset i do not want to replace phone every few years. Thus looking for a tank, rather than something that takes better then real life photos.

So now i go look for a better branded phones for longevity that also rugged, I pay a premium. Cheapest one is about R5K for Galaxy Xcover.

Maybe I should rethink my stratergy and just buy cheap phones and replace it as soon as it breaks. At least it comes with latest android without having to go the risky root of custom roms.
