Hi guys,

I want to get myself some good ol' dsl but I don't know which ISP or package to take. So let me start of by telling you what I need from my dsl:

- No gaming/browsing (will still use 3g for my browsing)
- Torrent dl.
- Maybe dl 20gb per month
- Not worried over time of day dl (ie night and weekends are fine but 24/7 would be great)
- not looking to break the bank so 384k line would be fine
- pref no contract with ISP required

umm.. think thats all? Any recommendations/suggestions would be awesome!

Thanks!

Take the uncapped lite option from openweb. For your usage it'll stay unshaped so should be perfect for you.

What is easier to pull off these days, international torrents or local newsgroups? Thx!

Cybersmart Night Rider Bundle 384k
-Perfect for gaming/browsing
-Perfect for torrenting anytime of the day, this is an unshaped account.
-You are given a 15GB international cap, plus uncapped in the mornings from 1am-8am. I manage to do 50GB easy with this package every month.
-You are given uncapped during 1am-8am so just leave a download manager/uTorrent to download during this time with the built in scheduler.
-This service will cost you a grand total of R300 a month including 384k line rental, 15GB unshaped international bandwidth, uncapped during the mornings from 1am-8am. This service is R50+- cheaper than Mweb uncapped, and is also unshaped meaning you will always receive the full speed of you connection without any shaping or throttling.
-This is a month to month service, you are only required to give a months notice of cancellation.

To take advantage of 10% saving on line rental costs I suggest you move your line over to Cybersmart. This simply means that you will only get one bill in the post every month, not two (one from Cybersmart, one from Telkom)
I have been with Cybersmart for well over 5 years, and they have never let me down. Good luck.

I must be honest if you have your line in your own name through Telkom then I would rather keep it in my name

The reason for this is because you can have allot of issues getting the line back in our name again if you moved it to a ISP

They do but they are very slow during the day
I get average of over 40Gb per month on torrents using 384K line
when I really wanted to I pulled over 60GB

Well the op is only looking at 20gb pm, so i reckon mweb should do the trick, what speed you get during the day Veneficus?

SAIX news server is going to ultimately be faster than torrents on a 384 line. IS news server is trash.
SAIX local bandwidth is expensive, though. So paying R80 for access to an international news server and 384 uncapped from mweb is likely going to suite you best.

SAIX news server is: 240 days retention, heavy shaped for uncached posts from 6am-6pm weekdays, 150-200KBps on uncached posts after 6pm and weekends (40KBps on 384 obviously).

Depending on the quality of service from mweb and their FUP you'll be able download at 40KBps 24/7 with an international usenet provider (supernews, for example).

during the day it can be very low 15 -20 KB/s max average would be around 10-15
about 19:00 it improves to about 30KB/s max and then late at night it starts getting full speed 38-40KB/s
I do however think this will improve a bit once MWEB's IPC upgrade is completed by Telkom

Ps this is just for torrents normal downloads is generally fine at all times

So if they are "very slow" then how do you get 2Gigs off of torrents in one day?

Busted. Haha.

MWEB and news servers go well generally. However they are upgrading their network and things have been a little erratic lately. So maybe wait until end of 1st week in October and then see how the feedback on the forums is going.

Lol @ busted!

You could wait, but this is what guys were saying months ago. Always wait and see when we do X or Y, then it's just the same.

Well, my news server has been acting very well as of last night sometime :) i am back to loving MWEB. Not one disconnect the entire day whilst i was at work.
Done 2,16GB since 12 last night :-) not bad eh?

Edit : *touch wood*

You missed the part where he said it's for torrents hey?

This is a 384kbps M-Web uncapped account used for 24/7 torrent downloads and some light web browsing & email.

- No gaming/browsing (will still use 3g for my browsing)

If you go adsl you won`t look back... gaming is better even on my 384k shaped afrihost than it ever was on 3g, and I don`t see much difference in browsing.
Video streaming is a bit slow though
