Hi all, I'm considering getting my first mbp and had a couple of questions.

* Are there any restrictions on torrent downloads?
* Does the software that allows you to write to NTFS reliable?
* Can I install hacked software? **this might be a touchy question for some
* Is there any quality loss going from thunderbolt to dvi (specific to connecting mbp to an HDTV)

I've been a windows user forever and haven't had much exposure to macs, so sorry if these are basic questions.

Thanks! :o

Hey

No restrictions on torrents.. works just like you would on Windows. On OSX you just use different software.. tho I'm sure there are OSX variants of the windows torrent software.

NTFS software is reliable I have been using Paragon NTFS for years now.

Hacked software - of course :)

I would use Tuxera NTFS. OS X software is generally cheap or freeware, so why on earth would you install hacked software? Most software goes for EUR50-100 - so not much of an issue.

Which model are you looking at getting?

If you don't need it urgently and are looking to buy brand new I would highly recommend you wait until they release the new models with the Haswell chips. Looks like they might be coming in October with the release of Mavericks, so you may be able to pick one up just before christmas here. Release date is only speculation at the moment but the Haswell MBPs are definitely coming and the extra battery life is really worth it.

Thanks for all the replies... pretty much answered all my questions.

I will be waiting for the release of the new models. Will be getting it from the states, so hopefully will get it before Christmas.

These mbp's are bloody expensive though...

But worth every cent! ;)

But worth every cent! ;)

I have 2 and have often wondered if they are really worth the extra money.
I always conclude that they are.
The one is very new, the other is a 2007 model. Neither has ever given hardware problems, a few software glitches, but no hardware problems.
I have found them to be utterly reliable.

There are no current restrictions on the software from what I've seen, but since the OS X App store, I've been wondering if the system is becoming more closed....

edit: The only noob thing about this post is the title...

I'm back :)

Could I use a SDXC/SDHC card on a MBP as a "second" hdd? Just looking at the prices and there is a huge jump when upgrading storage.

Also, are there places that can upgrade hdd and ram after purchase?

Yes re card.

Re upgrade -- If you have the standard (non retina) MBP then it's fairly easy to do this yourself; let Google be your guide.

With the MBA and Retina MBP you need to make the decision about RAM before your buy as these are soldered to the logic board. The SSD (HDD) can however be upgraded afterwards.

Also had a look at this option a while back. Had a look at the 64gb version - cannot recall off-hand what anything bigger cost - or if a 120gb is easily available this side. Then one would also be tempted to import one of those little adapters, that has the card sit virtually flush with the side of the laptop. Anything else sticks out a fair bit. The former, would allow you to simply leave the card in permanently - one less thing to worry about losing!

If memory serves - the above comes close to about R1k in any event. I popped up a thread about this a while back - kind of decided to wait it out, until prices come down some more.

Let us know what you decide! Good luck.

Thanks for all the help. I think I've settled on either a 13" MBP retina, with 8gb RAM and a 256gb hdd. I'm not using this for anything except entertainment so think this should suffice.

Now comes the fun part of convincing the wifey that its an "investment".

Oh, one more... does the apple care protection plan have coverage in SA?

I don't have Apple care - but pretty certain in is available in ZA! Good luck with the convincing! :)

Thanks. I'm gonna tell her it comes with a free pair of shoes... that should convince her :)
