Noob install issue

Lol, this thread's resident troll clearly has used Ubuntu, or virtually any Linux distro, recently, if ever!

I hate feeding them, but couldn't resist replying. :D

...what's the difference between Synaptic Package Manager and Ubuntu Software Centre?

Not much. Searching for something like openbox in software center will only return 3 items unless you click on the Show 11technical items at the bottom so if you did not notice it you might not see all the options you are looking for. I just find it easier to search for stuff in Synaptic, personal choice and all that.

Apparently Ubuntu is going to be removing Synaptic from their releases sometime in the future, I must say however the software center still needs a lot of work (its dang ugly).

Thanks all - I used apt-get install and installed it successfully (yay!), then read further and found I could have used the Synaptic package manager (which answers the question I had when I got the netbook - what's the difference between Synaptic Package Manager and Ubuntu Software Centre?)

It's working perfectly now :)

Syanptic is more powerful and was designed as a package manager. Software Center was designed as an "app-store" like program...
An applications can consist of and require a multitude of packages software center installs and manages them in the background.

They're slowly getting there. The new software center in the 11.04 alpha 2 allows users to rate and review applications but agree the UI isn't great.

Agreed. That Software Centre is annoying. It is great for new users that want to get their favourite popular application like a web browser or something. I mean lets face it Synaptic is not the most user-friendly thing in the entire world. I don't think the average user wants to know about a source package over a binary package versus a documentation package. They just want to install the thing that gets them to Google and Facebook. :p

While I agree that users shouldn't behave like that and should bother to learn a little more about the device that is storing a massive part of who they are the reality is that they don't.

Cath is the one who didn't know it. I'm just saying that Linux is not friendly in the same way as windows. If I want to install something I just double-click. Linux should be just as easy and this is definitely a failing. These are not the questions users should be asking in a 21st Century Graphical OS!

Theres an add/remove programs for people who dont know how to type :)

At least we have a 21st Century Graphical OS: http://www.youtube.com/user/pickledbushman#p/a/u/1/irWCm-LirwM

Windows cant come close to touching that ;)
