Noob Linux DualBoot

it will automatically install 64-bit software

Ok cool. :)

I am busy trying to find a nice MSN client with webcam support...Tried aMSN SVN but I get errors to do with tcl packages and tlc-dev, which the ubuntu forums tell me do occur. I tried their fixes but no joy...

Will try out your suggestion now.

Edit: Kopete works like a charm :)

I'm using Pidgin (was Gaim) for ICQ and Google Talk, but it can do quite a few others. Just thought I'd throw that in there :D.

What is Pidgin?

Pidgin is a multi-protocol Instant Messaging client that allows you to use all of your IM accounts at once.

Pidgin can work with:
  • AIM
  • Bonjour
  • Gadu-Gadu
  • Google Talk
  • Groupwise
  • ICQ
  • IRC
  • MSN
  • MySpaceIM
  • QQ
  • SILC
  • SIMPLE
  • Sametime
  • XMPP
  • Yahoo!
  • Zephyr

Ya, I had a look at that as well. Did not look too bad. For now I am pretty happy with Kopete. Seems to do everything I want it to with little fuss.

Now, newsreaders on the other hand...I have tried Pan with very little success when it comes to nzbs...

What newsreader would you recommend?

PS: Sucks that the Ubuntu forums are not locally hosted. End of the month = cap :(

I use GrabIt in Wine as a newsreader. I have nothing against Pan but I like two features in Wine that Pan doesn't have. Mainly:

1. Par checking while grabbing, and
2. How Grabit will extract the rar files automatically.

In Pan, I have everything configured correctly, I think, and yet when I try to 'import NZB' like you would normally do, it just does nothing

Since pan aint really great, I think you're ultimately looking at:
Open a terminal (accessories-terminal)
type:"sudo apt-get install wine"
Download the grabit.exe
Copy and paste the grabit exe into your home folder
Open a terminal (accessories-terminal)
Type: "wine grabit.exe"

The wine package is about 40megaburps.

Ok, I shall give that a go..

You must be confused.
Try this:
Open up a terminal window from applications-accesories-terminal.
type : "wget http://download.shemes.com/GrabIt171b.exe" without the quotes.
The file will now be located in your home folder.
Now when that completes, type "wine Grabbit171b.exe" to execute setup, and choose defaults all the way through.

Downloaded it and then did what you said and I get

Code:
 wine Grabbit171b.exe
wine: creating configuration directory '/home/henry/.wine'...
wine: '/home/henry/.wine' created successfully.
wine: could not load L"c:\\windows\\system32\\Grabbit171b.exe": Module not found

I literally just installed wine and grabit on my machine to test and it worked fine. Could be a 64bit wine support issue. I must tell you that the 64bit releases have always had software compatibility issues and a lot less will run on the 64 Ubuntu Distro. For example, the flash plugin for Firefox was not supported for 64bit
Ubuntu up until late last year, infact I'm not sure it is yet. I just feel it's an uphill climb not using i386 when you're on AMD.

I see. Thought that might be an issue at some stage :(

Have you ever used Pan? I literally can't get it to do anything at all...It looks like it could be a decent app though- lots of features.

I think it only recently added support for nzb files, and obviously poorly at that. If you open synaptic package manager(system-administration-synaptic), type in newsreader into the search area, try some of those packages in the results, trial and error style. BTW have you been to #ubuntu on freenode.net? Use Xchat IRC client to get there, literally hundreds of ppl in the channel, big community.

wine works perfectly on my sidux 64-bit install so I am not inclined to think that is the issue.

Cool, I will check it out.

Man, they are right when they say it is quite a mission to get things to work in Linux. :p

Another question for you :) : Have managed to change the background for Grub and also the login screen where you type in your username and password.

Now, after I type in my password, all I get is the standard awful orange screen until my desktop loads. I have perused the Ubuntu forums and there seem to be various ideas about this one. -->

I have added startup manager and downloaded a splash screen to display instead of the default and this does nothing...

I have also tried System-->Preferences-->Splash Screen . I enable the show splash screen on startup checkbox and then click on install. Then I find the screen i want to use and click open and the whole thing just disappears and nothing changes...

Re the IRQ chat client...Have not looked into that either really. Can one do that on local bandwidth?

D'oh! There were two B's in that one line of code above and I just copy pasted it. Working now :p:p

Still haven't fixed the splash screen issue though :p

ahh the curse of spelling. Here is a hint: Use Tab when in a terminal for filename completion.

So you could have typed "wine Grab" (without the quotes) then pressed Tab and it would have completed the name or showed you files starting with Grab. Another thing to remember is that Linux is case-sensitive.
