Noob queation about GPS

Depends on settings. Some data is transfered during "Assisted GPS" mode that speeds up the GPS coordinates and tracking calculations. The usage is minimal.

Sooo... An hour of GPS usage, travelling lets say 60KM/h, how much airtime is it then?

Yes, it will need to connect to the net at times and download data but it will download very little data. You can set it so that it does not connect to the net at all

All map data will be downloaded from the net. So... if you do not connect, you will not have a map... The gps will still work and give you your current coordinates.

Nonsense, the SA part of the maps are on the phone. If you erase them, use the map loader on the PC to restore them. If you go to an area where you don't have a nokia maps license (i.e. not in Southern Africa - assuming you got a SA phone) it will download them (but you can turn this off).

On a day-to-day basis, you will use a small amount of assist data (mainly to get the initial lock-on). It is only a tiny amount of data.

So, in short, it depends on what software you're using.
Luckily your service provider will be able to tell you how much it uses per minute/hour. Oh wait ... nope ... they don't care.

Actually you can disable the "online" assist function completely, and still have fully functional gps. Your phone might take a bit longer to lock onto satellites initially, but it doesn't need the assist part to do this, it just speeds up the process.
I have the Nokia 5800 and have turned off the assist function completely. GPS works fine and connects within a few seconds.
