Hi guys. Im a newbie to this forum i know nothing about rims n tires n would like some help. I bought a golf 4 that came with 17" rims and the tires are only 14". Is there any harm in driving with this?

Sorry.. run that one by us again....

someone shoehorned 14" tyres onto 17" rims?!?!?!!?!?!

Sorry, that's just not physically possible...best you go and look at those tyre sizes again!! :wtf:

Lol ya sorry guys i did say i know nothing about this. They 17" rims on 17" tires. But the car is suppose to have 14" tires n rims. Is it safe to drive with the 17inch?

Usually when the tyre diameter goes up the profile goes down when moving to larger rims. So in effect you end up with a total diameter which is more or less the same.

Yeah thats the problem the speedometer. its showing higher than it actually is..

Thats fine, not really an issue.

The big problem with 17s are the cost of TYRES! Especially low profile tyres!

Had to buy 18" tyres for my Dodge Caliber today, cost me a small fortune.

Speedos ar normally set higher than the speed you are really going. Its normal, but over 10km/h out at 140km/h or less is a bit too far out.

Haha exactly...Guess I rather just change the tyres to 14" then. Now gotta look for nice 14" rims. You guys know of the most affordable place to buy them from?

I doubt any mk4 came with 14s thats way to small. All the mk4 jettas had 16s. Just leave the 17s. They have better road holding n a smoother ride. Does it suit the car?

Strange to find someone who has 17's and wants to go smaller!! :wtf:

If you want to go smaller, then simply go back to the standard mags and tyres that came with the car when new. Otherwise keep the 17's, they cannot hurt the car, and usually look a bloody site better than the standard ones.

Thats baffling to say the least..

it would be cheaper to just get the speedo recalibrated.

Yes they look amazing on the car. Its those Audi A8 rims.

Lemme just give you some background info so you know the situation: Im doing my honours this year, so hopefully by next year i'll be working. My dad bought the car for me. When he bought it there wasnt much thread left especially in th front 2 tires. So he wants to replace them with "supposedly standard" 14" golf mags. I obviously dont want that coz i know how k@k it looks. But his argument is that 17s are too expensive, and the fact that the speedo is reflecting incorrectly just aint helping me convince him.

Hey toxic do you know how much it'll cost to get it recalibrated? And where I could get it done?

You don't have to recalibrate..it is simple enough to work out how badly it is out and then simply compensate. E.G. if it shows 70 at a true 60, drive at an indicated 70 in a 60 zone...easy peasy :p

16" are more expensive that 17" actually ...

Ive reached a conclusion im gonna stick with the rims and just buy the 17s. I drove the car today and was such a smooth drive. Thanks for the all the input guys, much appreciated!
