Noob question - Tazz is smoking, engine needs to be repaired?

Hi guys

I have a Tazz and the car is smoking pretty bad, it also eats quite a bit of oil. Car has 256 000km on the clock. ( also noticed that with summer upon us, the car is heating up, not to dangerous levels but pretty close)
I know that the engine needs to be redone but I haven't the foggiest idea what that means. ( I'm a noob with car mechanics)

What parts will need to be replaced and how much will this set me back? I'm just looking at a ball park figure so I know what I'm in for.

How about taking the car to a proper mechanic and getting it diagnosed?We cant tell you anything without knowing whats wrong.

I will do that, but I'm fairly certain the engine needs to be redone. :/ just don't want to get ripped off + need to budget for the expense.

Right now, someone could quote me R15000 and I would be none the wiser :/
 
There's lots of variables to "redone".

Does it smoke on overrun (when you lift off the accelerator while you're driving) or under power? At idle?

The overheating could be lots of things - do the radiator fans come on? Does the water pump work? Is the thermostat working correctly?

What does the oil on the dipstick look like? What does the bottom of the oil filler cap look like?
 
Smoking and using oil generally means worn valve rings/seats... Basically oil leaking through the valves into the cylinders and being burnt.

Get it fixed fairly soonish as your spark plugs will be getting all burnt up and you'll start getting misfires as well as the possibility of it eating away at your piston rings which will cost a bunch to fix...

It smokes when on idle but I don't notice it smoking at 120km/h.

Yeah, Radiator works, water pump is fine. thermostat looks to be working fine.

Dipstick is low but I check it daily atm and top up if necessary. I'm going through 5 liters of a oil in a ~5-6 week period. Its eating oil.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you have a ball park figure of what it's likely to cost?

I didn't mean level, I meant what the oil itself looks like.

Smoking at idle is most likely valve stem seals, as mentioned before.
The good news for that is that the fix for that includes a new head gasket, which is quite possibly an issue as well in a car that age (and could contribute to the overheating thing).
 
Go to a mechanic. They will quote you before the fix so no need to worry.
