Noob questions on Xbox360

HI Guys

I am not a gamer and is considering buying a XBox360 console for my son (10Y) and need some pointers as I will most likely buy a used machine.

My prefered deal: Console(250Gb+) + 2 controllers + kinect + a few games = R2000-R3000

1. What are the basics to look for and what are the pitfalls to avoid (scammer tricks)
2. Some machines are advertised as 4Gb - can these be expanded with xbox hdd
3. Are there any differences between an five year old machine and a three month old machine. This refers to external appearance as well as performance (RAM etc).

Any other help/advice would be appreciated

The 4GB machine can be expanded with a USB storage device. You format within the 360. You can then install games to it.

To my knowledge, all the Xbox 360s have same processing power and performance, but the black one uses smaller components and has better cooling than the older white ones. Also, the black has built in wifi and hdmi. The older (first 2 to 3 years) white ones didn't have hdmi.

So I would get a second-hand black Xbox 360. I think the black ones were first released in 2011 or so.

get an xbox slim newer model they have a less red light of death failure rate.
 
Like the previous guy said make sure you purchase a xbox360 slim the older phat consoles suffer from heating issues
You can easily pick up a decent xbox360 for around 2000 and 2500 at a cash crusader .... I have purchased quite a few for friends of mine that are casual gamers .... But please make sure to test the console properly ...

If you have uncapped ADSL at home, make sure you get Xbox Live Gold Membership. You can get good deals online for a 12 month membership.
This will allow you to get two free titles a month + regular discounts on games bought through the online store.

Which region account are you on. I was on SA originally and the store was appalling. I'm on UK account now, but the Rand / Pound is killing me.
