Hi this is probably a silly question but...

why is it that I can't download single files at faster than 200KB on a 4mb line, yet I can download two files simultaneously both at 200KB? Is this something to do with shaping? I'm with Imaginet and they have said that after 7pm or something they unshape all their connections. Is there a website or tool I can use to check the status of my line i.e shaped/unshaped or do I just take their word for it?

Thanks very much to anyone who can educate me!!

There are all sorts of reasons why you might not get top speed on a single download thread. Just get yourself a free multithreaded download manager, like Orbit, then pretty much everything will come down at your maximum line speed.

thanks I'll give orbit a try. I just thought it was strange that no download has ever pipped the 200KB mark...

Thanks for your previous reply too, I think you may be right. I guess I'm not used to the huge variations that come with the faster line when my 384 was so reliable - and my first reaction is it must be telkom being stupid. Which it is. Always. Even now.

Ive always had this problem aswell, although you'll probably find files from a local server will go at full speed. I might be simplifyng it but if u check out speedtest.net you'll see the limits of your line to different servers around he world.

But ya, the download manager is the best way to get around it. I use Free Download Manager, works great.

P.s i even tried getting an axxess unshaped prepaid voucher to check out the difference (normal account Telkom do3) and besides slightly better latency, i didnt really see much difference.

I havnt really seen my downloads being capped at a certain speed other than the line max, but i have gotten that the speed wil sometimes 'throttle' down to nearly 0kb/s and then go back up again... its kinda annoying :p
