Sooo I was just wondering,
Is there a specific router used for FTTH/FTTB?

Fibre is the last mile, but with regards to the ISP, can one use any ISP?

Can a DSL username and password be used on a router with Fibre...? :erm:

1) Any broadband router should work - the cable will terminate with an RJ-45 (Ethernet plug) that you will plug into your router.

2) I think you will have to go with whichever ISPs are provisioning services in your area.

3) No. - ADSL is a different beast altogether.

I will need to do more research on how exactly a Fibre router is setup.

You need to be a bit more specific on which fibre provider you going with. Necro has stated incorrect facts if you were to go with Telkom.
 
Instead of the router dialing over the DSL interface, it uses instead a WAN port to dial PPPOE over LAN.

So the setup would be rather similar in this regards, Username and Pass...

As for if you can dial DSL accounts over fiber, you can so long as you are using a fiber line from Telkom, then you can connect any DSL account.(This has been posted on here various times)

This is what I wanted to know.

So there is no difference between a DSL and Fibre ISP account, it just connects via different interface.
 
You will be provided with a Fibre Modem.

Your router will then connect to this via a ethernet port. You can pretty much use any router than has a WAN port and supports a PPPoE connection.

My router is a Microtik Home Access Point. Uses basic PPPOE via a WAN port to connect to the net with a username and password. Most ADSL routers I have seen don't have WAN support unless they are more expensive models (e.g. the local Huawei VDSL router has it).
 
Vumatel requires no PPPOE login information. Their fiber terminates to a small converter that you patch ethernet into. Plug your laptop directly into the converter. Then setup your ISP connection using their webportal interface when you open your browser. Selecting from a list of ISPs.

Then you just patch your old router, provided it has a WAN ethernet port. Instead of using the RJ11 DSL phone port, my router had both.
My router then got assigned its public IP address and I was finished. (you might need to ensure your router has PPPOE login disabled)

Sounds like the ONT has layer 3 support (Frogfoot configure this remotely via the ONT, but the capabilities are mostly left to the router - i.e. login details).

Hi Guys, i should be getting fibre really soon (next week or 2) i currently have a Belkin N750 or N600(can't remember which one i bought) router, but it use a RJ11 DSL port. do i need to spend another 2K on a descent router or is there a RJ11 to RJ45 converter that i can buy or does the DSL port work differently compared to a WAN port rendering to converter pointless.

please help i wanna have everthing ready when they come to do the installation in my house.

As far as I am aware there are unique circumstances where you can convert the two. However, whether or not this will work in practice with a PPPOE over WAN is another thing entirely.

Are they not supplying a router with your package? This is common practice. What provider are you with? A lot of the ONT boxes do the actual PPPOE via layer 3 and they always come free with the installation.

So you will almost definitely need a WAN enabled router if you wish to distribute to more than one device wirelessly. Whether you can connect via the ONT is another thing altogether.
 
PS, it might be possible to change one of your LAN ports to a WAN port with a firmware update (did not check Belkin website).

Luckily ASUS released a firmware version for my router that let me configure one of the LAN ports as a WAN port.

Saved me from having a buy a new router :p
 
thanks for that. what's the best wireless extender i should get... i'm planning on get a 50mbps line. i have 2 consoles, 2 roku's, 2 ipads and a galaxy tab plus a PC running Plex as a media center that are constantly connected to my wireless network. The Belkin could handle it with ease but i also don't want to spend that much again but i will if i have to.
