I'm a Guild Wars player, but the only servers being overseas really bugs me. So just when you don't need that extra ping to win a PvP, you lose :(

So the things I wanted to know about WoW is the following:

*If I purchased the Classic WoW game from Take2, will I be able to create an account (without paying subscription fee) and play on local servers 4 free?

I'm not interested in paying monthly 4 a game just to have high latency.

Not like it's Blizzard's fault that you live on the other side of the world, now is it?

Private servers are illegal.

It is illegal yes....
BUT
You can do that, or download the full client from legal sources. http://www.wowwiki.com/Patch_mirrors

But the private servers do have their faults, be prepared for a lot of bugs.

If you do decide to go that route, which is 100& illegal, and this is just an informative post... not be taken seriously... and in the spirit of good gaming practice, as stated by The Church of Gaming's Bible... "And the Gods said, 'Let Gaming know no boundaries.' and Gaming was to be enjoyed in all possible forms, in all corners of the earth, by all creatures capable."

'nuff said

LOL, well if it's illegal then WoW is just a money making scheme. Like I can understand if you were to pay a monthly fee 4 playing on there servers (not seeing how it can cost them over 8 000 000$ a month), but if a player were to play on a non-Blizzard server, then it should be 4 free.

It's 2 bad because WarCraft has in my opinion the best lore of all games ever.

Not quite a money making scheme... a LOT of development goes into WoW...
Think of all the artists, programmers, voice actors, technicians, etc to create a world as rich as that. The amount of hours can't be counted I think. So you are paying for all of that effort. Small price then if you think about it.

Then I haven't even started with the updates and further developments... the private server guys did nothing more than take what Blizzard put all the effort into, and use without paying anything, except their own hosting costs. And then half-arse around with updates and bug fixes...

do you think a few desktops wired together make the WoW realms ?

Theres a reason its the best lore. They pay their people well to come up with that lore, maintain it and then present it so that 8million+ people are willing to pay for it.

Commercial gaming isnt a charity, its an industry. The owners of Guild Wars would charge a monthly fee, if they could get away with it, but that means they will be compared with WoW. They know they cant compete, so they dont.

Still...Blizzard could easily paint their walls with money!

I subscribe and I don't mind the cost (before I ever tried it I would have told you that you were mad for subscribing to a game) - I just wish they employed a few more GM's...the other night I waited three hours for one with no reply (and I was looking at a wall while in Ghost form...mounted on their gryphon). Okay maybe just allow HS to take you back to the graveyard or something but my point is this:

The great and mighty Blizzard has always said "we'll release it when it's ready"...yet with WoW they sometimes seem to jump the gun...the quality bar isn't quite as high with WoW as it was with their other single player games - then again they haven't released anything else in years so let's hold thumbs (Staraft 2 had better be friekin' perfect!!).

You cant really compare multi-player to single player, even the 32 or 64 player fps games. Compare WoW to others in the same market, Warhammer, LOTRO, etc., I also think there customer service could improve. massively, however, the difference between WoW and Warhammer, is that with Warhammer, i didnt even bother to renew my trial, because I thought for a graphics engine recently developed, the char animation was shocking. Annoying, in fact. With LOTRO, the trial download didnt work. I didnt even bother to phone customer services. If they cant deploy a file to the FTP server.....

True - but then again it's "Blizzard" /sparkliegoodness. They're supposed to take their time when releasing titles (all about quality and balancing)...but it just seems that with enough money driving the stakes they can't afford to muck around with it like they have been with Stacraft 2...11+ million subscribers is something you want to keep going! How many PvP battles these days (not sure after patch 3.2) weren't dominated by DK's, Pallies, Druids and Rogues? Balance - where Blizzard...where?

Let me put it to you this way. Go play on the Emu-servers (Illegal is such an over kill). You will be sucked into the greatness of WoW that you will move to a subscription to play on the official servers. I know I went through the same thing.

The biggest problem with the Emu-servers is the player base, there is to few people playing and the ecconomy is worthless because of it. Then you get the bugs which are endless.

You will become frustrated as you learn the game and start to get good at it. You then move to official but you're used to the 40 ms pings. Now this will frustrate you even more.

Best advice, take it or leave it is to play on the official from the start. When you buy Classic you can level up to level 60 before you need the expansion and the first 30 days are free anyway. Once you have played that free 30 days you will never go to an Emu-server ;) Or if you do you will try it for a few days and just get back to WoW :D

I love how people seem to forget that fact that Blizzard is a business like any other. They are doing it to make money and don't let anybody else tell you otherwise. If you want to play the game properly, you have to pay for it. There are substitutions (free mmorpgs) but they will NEVER have the scope or lore that World of Warcraft has.

Also, they have data centres all around the world to cater for the playerbase. Do you think the hardware needed to maintain that would be cheap? They have electricity bills just like you and me, and they need to pay staff.

money making scheme oh no you dont say? i mean why would a company want to make money off their product, *gasps*

there are over hunderd servers, there bandwidth costs are insane, plus hard ware upgrades, plus content updating all the time.

11 million subscribers X what lets say 15 pounds = whit my shouty maths to 165 million b4 tax ?

you cant use 15 as a number as alot of people by yearly subs, they make alot of money guaranteed but how much costs do they have in comparison

then lets use 10 and that = 110 million. pocket change I tell you

played on a private server once or twice.

Kinda annoying when every second mob evade bugs and half your talents dont work because they are seen as OP. I remember one server removed reflective shield as a talent xD

and thats why i pay blizzard.
