NordVPN actually allows quite a few connection modes one of the suggestions is using socks5 proxy with torrent clients.

Using Nordvpn client and using VPN as the connection mode my connection is slowed a bit to about 14MB/s max download rate. Using Socks5 proxy setup in qbittorent and configured to only allow traffic that is supported by the proxy I get around 20MB/s download speed and using my direct connection I get about 23MB/s download speed.

Do we really need to use VPN and if you really feel like hiding your IP is Socks5 proxy in a torrent client enough? Thoughts?

If you want to hide your IP then the Proxy isn’t good enough which is ultimately the difference.

I would argue if you are going to use a proxy you may as well just connect directly.

Convenience over security.

Personally even though I have access to multiple VPN’s I don’t bother with them for torrents.

Personally I used to do the whole VPN route but find these companies all suck at throughput. They are selling the same bandwidth to you and millions of other users.

Might be a good idea to setup some kind of VPN system and resell it only to a certain amount of people guaranteeing bandwidth.
