"normal sim" on iphone

Any iPhone upgraded to firmware 3.1.3 cannot be network unlocked at present if it has baseband of 05.12.01. Earlier basebands can be downgraded to allow earlier firmware (3.1.2) to be restored to the iPhone. If you have a UK/US phone with 3.1.3 and 05.12.01 you're S.O.L. Your iPhone will be a brick in SA.

Apparently there are some hackers who have found an unlocking exploit on those latest versions of the firmware/baseband, but they aren't releasing them until Apple releases OS4.0. Or so I read...

I vaguely recall that there was something in the UK where you could pay 15quid or something and the carrier (Vodafone I am guessing) would do an official unlock the phone for you. If that was done then any SA SIM should work in the phone. Maybe give them a call / pop into an outlet and find out from them if they still do that etc.

there is an option on O2 to unlock the iphone for other networks.....i'll do that just before i leave...spanks

If you come right with that please let us know - I'm sure there will be a few people with bricked phones who would like to send them back to the UK for this service.

I'm pretty sure that O2 would check if the phone was originally sourced/purchased from them (like what Vodacom does when you take your phone for repair here) and if it was then yes they would probably do what was needed but if it was say an AT&T phone I bet they wouldn't help you. ie it isn't a general unlock service, it is an unlock device option for their iPhone customers.

yes it is only if you bought your phone through O2

I recently moved back from UK to SA and had to jailbreak and unlock my 2G iphone on firmware 3.1.2. Works fine in SA with a vodacom pay-as-you-go. Forget about getting a contract here, you need to have a job for 3 months.
