North West Farmer killed

A 59-year-old farmer was shot dead and his wife was assaulted in Zeerust on Sunday morning, North West police said.

The man was killed by three men who broke into their house on Welverdiend Farm near Groot Marico, said Brigadier Thulane Ngubane.

The men shot the farmer and assaulted his 54-year-old wife with a panga She suffered head injuries.

The men then robbed them of R260,000, a laptop, and a firearm, and drove away with the farmer's white double-cab Mazda, said Ngubane.

The vehicle was later found a few kilometres away from the farm.

Police were searching for the men, he said.

I think he meant that we are often told that robbery isn't a motive for farm attacks, when R260 000 sounds a lot more appealing than being part of a genocide squad

As soon as there is a killing the attention to the crime is escalated and so is the sentence the criminals would face if caught. The sound of gunfire also draws attention. Also by killing, you reduce your target market as a criminal. Bullets also cost money. So it makes no logical sense, unless A) They were afraid of being recognized by the farmer or B) There is serious hatred involved on top of the MO for stealing.

Unfortunately stories like this appear to be reoccurring too much to just call it happenstance. That rules out A) for the most part. We might say the farmer posed a threat, but that may be on the odd occasion of these sorts of crimes and not across the board.

I agree, I used to think about this as random and opportunistic (farmers being isolated) crimes, but the torture and death involves makes me think otherwise.

Torture in most cases is used to get information (where's the gun safe? where is the money?) it amazes me in CCTV footage you often see people getting into a tug of war with a criminal over some material object, just let it go.

As for the shooting, the criminals are aware there are guns on the premises (look what's being taken) and are probably not going to take chances on whether their victims are armed. Sometimes the victims get lucky and get the first shots off and kill the assailants but unfortunately this isn't often the case.
