Oslo - A Norwegian court on Monday sentenced a Latvian airBaltic co-pilot to six months in jail after he failed a breathalyser test before take-off from Oslo's airport.

The 38-year-old man - who registered an alcohol level that was almost seven times the legal limit - admitted that he drank two bottles of whisky and some beer with the other crew members before the flight's planned departure for Greece with around 100 passengers aboard on August 8.

In his verdict, the judge highlighted the co-pilot's high level of intoxication, the number of people whose lives would have been endangered if he had flown the plane, the length of the flight, and the fact that he must have known that his colleagues had also been drinking.

Meanwhile the 50-year-old Latvian pilot, whose alcohol level was more than double the legal limit, has rejected some of the charges against him.

I understand its his responsibility etc to be 100% before flying... but, this is like being arrested at a bar and jailed because if you drove, you would have endangered peoples lives

Umm, no, this is like being breathalysed when you are in your car with the keys in the ignition.

Norwegian police tested the crew shortly before take-off after receiving a tipoff from an anonymous caller

These guys need rehab/AA. Only a full blown alcoholic would be so stupid as to do this.

Perhaps planes need the equivalent of that Volvo alcohol tester key, "blow in here to start aircraft".

Well done on the sentencing, but

Say what?
The other crew members too?
So it's ok for them to be p1ssed. Not a problem if they mess up in their duties.

Tend to agree, in the case of the above I would have thought the in flight safety briefing would be of paramount importance.

Big difference in responsibilities here between a co-pilot and somebody serving tea,you cant even begin to compare the two.

But I think its a great move from Norway, should have made it 1 year in jail and ban him from flying again to set an example.

Well he is in the process of being fired, his pilots license will probably be revoked as well, doubt he will be flying airliners in future.
