Getting all that lead in the air was quite a problem. While in theory the planes could stay airborne for days things like pilot fatigue, food and stresses on the aircraft meant it wasn’t feasible at all

From what I've heard was that whenever the nuke B36 flew , it was accompanied by another aircraft containing decontamination troops.

In case the nuke B36 went down - those poor blokes had to cordon the area off and try to decon the crash site.

In 1991 the B-52Gs from bases in England and on the island of Diego Garcia flew low level bombing missions until Coalition forces completed air superiority and were able to suppress any air defense systems capable of reaching bombers at a higher altitude.

If you zoom in you can see the BUFFs on the apron. By the looks of it there are worse places to be stationed.

EDIT:

The island also functions as an 'abort landing' strip for the Space Shuttle, owing to its long runway and relative isolation, being the only 'friendly' airbase that NASA can use in the Indian Ocean. The Shuttle has never needed to land there.

KB Tupolev proposed an aircraft with four turbo-prop engines that would provide a range of more than 13,000 km and speeds of more than 800 km/h at altitudes of 10,000 meters.

Also, they featured this aircraft on Russia Today channel. Very very impressive specs for such an old design.
(They called it the 'Bear' because of the noisy roar it makes )

The US would only deploy something like a B52 for crude phycological carpet bombing type missions once air superiority had already been achieved. The real precision first strike stuff would be done by B2s and F117s and Tu95 is as good as a Dak when compared to these.
